Actress SIN Ae-ra debuts on the big-screen with the film "Ice Bar". SHIN plays a single mother whose son, still a young boy, sells ice cream using an improvised ice cream parlor. The boy wishes to look for his father in Seoul and therefore tries to earn money for the trip. The boy is played by PARK Ji-bin.

In "Ice Bar" SIN is a caring mother who raises her child as well as she can and tries to protect him from a society which discriminates single mothers and their children. SHIN Ae-ra is often in the headlines for other reasons than acting. She and her celebrity actor husband CHA In-pyo ("Hanbando") are known for their philanthropy, usually for the well-being of children. In real life they tackled another social issue when the couple adopted a child. Korean babies are usually adopted abroad, also because of the prominence of bloodlines in Korean society. The Japanese-born actress "Yoo Min" (27) is preparing for a triumphant return her homeland via the small screen. At a press conference on Thursday, Yuko Fueki, as her birth certificate reads, confirmed she has signed a contract with the influential management company Oscar Pro and is expected to appear on Japan's Fuji TV in a soap with the working title "Attention Please".

The actress is returning to her homeland five years after she left to come work in Korea in 2001.

"Yoo Min" made her debut in Korea with MBC drama "Our Home", followed by such dramas as "All In", and "Stained Glass". But it wasn't until last year's stunning performance opposite Son Chang-min in "Bad Wife" that she was launched into stardom here. The Japanese press has closely followed her work.

Olive Nine Co., Ltd., which produces the hit dramas like "Green Rose", "Bad Wife" and "Lovers in Prague" penetrates the drama market in China.

Olive Nine signed a MOU with the Hong Kong stock exchange-listed Chinese company CHC on 11 Dec to co-produce the drama in China. CHC is a consolidated health and beauty concern.

Olive Nine and CHC will co-produce the series with US$3 million of production cost. The story is about the medical center to be telecasted all through China at the end of next year.

The shooting place will be the hospital in Beijing organized by CHC. The Chinese company takes all production cost while Olive Nine is responsible for all production works such as planning, writing scenario, producing and distributing.

Director Kim Tae-won of Olive Nine said, "The planning is already started and the shooting will begin from the mid of next year in China. The drama will be aired first in China and then it will be exported to all around Asia".

SEOUL, June 8 (Yonhap) -- Until Yuko Fueki crossed the East Sea in 2001 for her high-stakes debut in South Korea's showbiz world, the idea of a Japanese entertainer becoming a star here was unthinkable.

Casting a Japanese artiste was taboo in a country that still harbors deep-rooted anti-Japanese fervor, a legacy of Japan's iron-fisted colonial rule between 1910-45.

But Fueki, whose Korean stage name is "Yoo Min", broke the racial barrier to become Korea's first Japanese television star.

In recent years the 27-year-old actress, whose looks easily match the famed beauty of Korean starlets, has seemed to crop up everywhere: appearing in music videos, sit-coms and makeup and coffee advertisements.

Local talk shows were unable to satisfy the audience's growing demand for her charming modesty and natural beauty.

Female characters are taking larger roles in recent television dramas. But ironically, their biggest enemies on the shows are members of their own sex.

The characters Eun-mi in the SBS drama "Bad Wife", Hyun-a in the MBC drama "New Employee", Hee-joo in KBS drama "Pretty You" and Hye-mi in MBC drama "Be Strong Kum-soon" are all women who seem to thrive on tormenting the main female characters.

TV critic Lee Kyong-soon says that in dramas that deal with love triangles, there is no better way of increasing viewer ratings than using a storyline in which "woman's enemy is woman".

"Most of the time, a woman who is involved in a love triangle has a successful career and does not seem to be short of anything", Lee said.
