Renowned Korean director BONG Joon-ho chose Aoi Yu to star in his short film "Shaking Tokyo", part of an omnibus film project titled "Tokyo". Filming is under way and Aoi Yu plays a pizza delivery girl who changes the life of a hikikomori, the Japanese name for someone with agoraphobia.

BONG made his name with contemporary classics like "Barking Dogs Never Bite" and "Memories of Murder". However, it's his latest "The Host" which is the major influence on his name internationally..

Aoi Yu caught attention with her role in Hanna and Alice. Her role in "Hula Girls" – by the Korean-Japanese director LEE Sang-il – gained her a lot of international attention as the film has been successful in many film festivals.

The other two episodes of the omnibus will be directed by Michel Gondry and Leos Carax. The film's are scheduled for release next year.

Egg Films and Chungeorahm Films released their horror summer title "The Cut" (Haeboohakgyosil). The film is directed by SON Tae-woong and the cast features the young actors HAN Ji-min and ON Joo-wan.

The film depicts medical students who one by one start to meet their death when they start dissecting a corps of a mysterious beautiful woman. The film tackles the horror genre from a visual imaginative angle rather than relying on gore.

SON is both a director and writer and he penned BONG Joon-ho's international breakthrough "Barking Dogs Never Bite" (2000). HAN has already a long career in television dramas. ON was recognized for his leading role in JO Chang-ho's 2006 international film festival favorite "The Peter Pan Formula". He also played supporting roles in the gangster film "Bloody Tie" and the martial arts film "The City of Violence".

Two film festivals are set to excite movie fans: the Chungmuro Film Festival and the Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival (CinDi). Director Kim Hong-joon, 51, and movie critic Jeong Seong-il, 48, who are in charge of the festivals, have distinctive visions for the future of film.
Kim pursues the rediscovery of tradition, while Jeong pushes toward the future by working in a digital format rather than film.
The two directors recently spoke to the JoongAng Ilbo. Kim began by stating that the Chungmuro Film Festival is going to be held in the midst of a crisis in Korea's movie culture.
"It's a serious problem", he said. "I fear that the golden age of the past will vanish".
Jung said that movies today have become like fast food and are somewhat similar to today's popular music culture.
"We're living in an age where discussion about movies is shallow", he continued. "It seems as if there is no more 'cinephile' culture.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The Host" director BONG Joon-ho will participate in an omnibus project along with French directors Michel Gondry and Leos Carax. The film will be a triptych of tales set in Tokyo – hence the working title "Tokyo Tales". Each director will write and direct a segment, with the shootings, pending negotiations, expected to begin in July or August around the same time.

BONG completed the script for his segment of the film while on route from Australia to New York, a 26-hour flight. He is in NY to attend a mini-retrospective of his films and is also promoting the Magnolia Pictures release of hit thriller The Host in US theaters.

While the plots for "Tokyo Tales" are still hush-hush, BONG is quoted in the Reporter as saying, "It will be just like 'New York Stories' but set in Tokyo", adding only that his story involves a relationship between a Japanese man and woman.

A special showing of director Bong Joon-ho's works has been held in three US cities of New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
The Korean Film Council said Monday that it has organized the event to mark the release of Bong's recent film "The Host" there on Friday.

Two of Bong's previous films were shown in New York on Feb. 25, in Chicago on Saturday and in San Francisco on Monday. "Barking Dogs Never Bite" was his debut commercial film and "Memories of Murder" became a hit by drawing 5 million viewers when it was released in Korea. The director himself attended a meeting with the audience in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, a retrospective of director Hong Sang-soo will be held at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, which will open on March 15.
