Critics Say Korean Films Need Stronger Marketing

Korean movies have enjoyed growing recognition by international film festivals receiving a few major honors in recent years.
But the US Academy Awards have largely ignored Korean cinema something which Korean film critics say must change through stronger marketing.
Son Heekyung has more.
More than two decades have passed since Korea began selecting ONE domestic film a year for an Academy Award nomination.
But chances seem slim of a Korean movie getting an Oscar nod.
Korean cinema has gained higher stature at international film events like Cannes, Berlin and Venice, but has had little luck with the Academy Awards.
The closest Korea got was in 2005 when director Park Se-jong became the first Korean nominated for an Oscar for his animated film "Birthday Boy".
So why is getting the award so elusive for Korea?

Animation Festival held in the 'the lakeside city'

The 9th Chuncheon Anitown Festival kicks off on 30 Sept.

The 9th Chuncheon Anitown Festival is held from 30 September to 3 October in the Animation Museum, the Hightech Venture Town and Ilsong Art Hall of Hallym University located in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.

Among several workshops, animation screening and conferences, director Park Se-jong's workshop would be the most noticeable event. His "Birthday Boy" was nominated for the best animated short film in the 77th Academy Awards, and local animators and interested students will be able to get a change to meet up with Park on the opening day of the festival. Director Park Se-jong was the first South Korean to have a work nominated for an Oscar.

Besides, the directors and producers of Japan's Chibli Studio will join a seminar to present 'How does Chibli Studio work?' on September 1, and Micheal Goguen, director of the animated series TV show, 'Batman,' will host a seminar regarding the process of its production next day. Ot...| More

Theater chain 'Cinus' launches into short cinema support.
The theater chain prepares 'Ten minutes stroll corner' to screen promising short movies during 10 minutes before screening of a full-length film. As the first film of such a plan, 'Cinus' spokesman said that the theater chain would release 'Birthday Boy' directed by Park Se-jong in CinusG located in Kangnam station, Seoul, Cinus Bundang, and Cinus Daejeon on June 9.

In addition to this program, the theater chain is collecting short films publicly, which are possible to screen in theaters with a quantity of 10 minutes, from the general public.

For reference, 'Birthday Boy's synopsis is unfolded with a story in which little Manuk is playing on the streets of his village and dreaming of life at the front where his father is a soldier.

He returns home to find a parcel on the doorstep and, thinking it is a birthday present, he opens it. But its contents will change his life.

The 3rd Taiwan Internaional Animation Film Festival, scheduled to be held on May 20, prepares Korean animation special screening.

This year's Taiwan International Film Festival has prepared Korean animation special screening, which breaks down into two sections such as 'Korea's contemporary animation' and 'Korean student animation'.

The Festival's Korean animation screening totals to 28 animations such as 'Hungboga', and 'Calling back the spirit' was invited to the 'Best of the World' section.

Ahead of the 3rd Taiwan Animation Film Festival, the Anifest 2005, scheduled to be held in CZECH on May 5-11, also invites a total of four short and full-length Korean animations.

'Empress Chung' by animation maker Nelson Shin is to be screened in this film festival's full-length competiton section.

Besides, 'Birthday Boy' and 'Cold blood' are to be submitted for presenting on the screen in its student cinema competition section and video clip section respectively.

This year's Anifest 2005 to be held in CZECH on May 5-11, invites a total of four short and full-length animations.


'Empress Chung' by animation maker Nelson Shin is to be screened in this film festival's full-length competiton section. Besides, 'Birthday Boy' and 'Cold blood' are to be submitted for presenting on the screen in its student cinema competition section and video clip section respectively.

The organiser announced a competition in the following film categories:a) Feature-length film, b) Short film
c) Television film, d) Television serial, e) Video clip, f) Advertisement, introductory spot, g) Student film
h) Film made by children
