With the right combination of entertainment and social awareness, "Memories of Murder" became a huge hit last year, topping the local box office and sweeping most of the major film awards. Based on a real serial murder case that took place in the mid-1980s in the town of Hwasong, Kyonggi Province, the film takes the format of a mystery thriller but grapples with the social constraints of its times. The two detectives in charge of the case, played impressively by Song Gang-ho and Kim Sang-kyung, are forced to work within the limitations of their environment, as well as their own limitations and mistakes. This uncertainty pervades throughout the film and gets even stronger when a suspect is found. Seoul Selection Bookstore This romantic comedy takes its name from the famous novel by Charles Dickens, and though both the book and film deal with a reversal of fortunes, there's nothing else that's similar about the two. Using unemployment as its theme _ something many people in their 20s and 30s would likely empathize with _ the film is a lighthearted and absurd story about how a string of coincidences reshapes two people's lives. Chang-sik (Lim Chang-jung) and Mi-yong (Kim Sun-ah) are down on their luck. Despite having a degree in psychology from a top university, Chang-sik hangs out at racetracks and is the black sheep of his family.
