The 2000 Korean film "JSA - Joint Security Area"based on the novel " DMZ " by Park Sang-yeon will be turned into a musical later this year. It is the first of its kind to deal with the politically sensitive subject of occurrences between North and South Korea on stage.
Renowned writer of "DMZ" and the drama "Queen Seon-deok", Park will modify his original work for the stage version.
The novel, which was released in 1997, focuses on invisible powers which destroy humanity through hostilities between the two Koreas, while the film version highlights on humanity and sheds a new light on North Korea rather than merely highlighting ideological conflicts.
The musical will use visual effects to portray the breathtaking natural landscape of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), along with dynamic and vibrant musical numbers.
The Muk Company said that it has not decided on casting but it will have a star-studded lineup, equivalent to that of the film ver... |More

Change of guard ceremony at Deoksugung (palace)
On Oct. 14, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Association declared "Visit Korea Years 2010 through 2012" with a view to attracting 10 million foreign tourists a year. About 7 million inbound tourists visited Korea in 2007. What should Korea do to attain the goal of attracting 3 million more foreign tourists per year? Foreign tourists visiting Myeong-dong and Insa-dong, two renowned attractions in Seoul, may provide clues to the answer.
The main street in Myeong-dong was wet on the afternoon of Oct. 23 with rain that had fallen after a long drought. It was not as crowded as usual, probably due to the wet pavement. But there were more Japanese tourists than ever before. As the Korean tour guide for a group of Japanese high school girl students quipped, it looked as if Myeong-dong were like a street in Tokyo. The yen strengthened against the won that day, exceeding 1,400 won per 100 yen. This means a Japan... |More

Get yourself ready for a two-hour thriller that takes place among the guard posts on the southern side of the demilitarized zone.
Director Kong Soo-chang is back with his second feature "The Guard Post".
Kong's film — released last Thursday — focuses on a mysterious massacre that occurs in the DMZ one rainy day. Twenty armed soldiers at a guard post have been mysteriously killed. One is left alive, but unconscious.
The Defense Ministry dispatches an investigation team. Sergeant Major Noh Seong-gyu (Cheon Ho-jin) is given 24 hours to find the body of Yu Jeong-woo (Jo Hyeon-jae), who was in command of the guard post.
Kong's previous feature, "R-Point", also takes place in a military setting. It's about a Korean unit dispatched to the Vietnam War that receives a strange radio transmission from a group of soldiers previously thought missing in action.
"I served in the army under Korea's military regime", Kong said. "During that time, the government was in total control".

In his second feature film "The Guard Post" ("GP506"), director Kong Soo-chang ("R-Point") tells another agonizing tale about military life. But this time, he takes viewers to the demilitarized zone (DMZ). In this bloody mystery thriller, Gong explores the ever-so relevant yet alien area, where dark secrets and ghosts of forgotten histories lurk.
But the film does not deal with the ideological conflict between the Koreas. Rather, it fathoms the raw human instinct for survival.
On the 38th parallel, between the two Koreas, lies the last remnant of the Cold War. "Demilitarized" zone is perhaps the most improper name for one of the most heavily fortified places on Earth. On the south side is the tightly contained Guard Post 506 (GP506), where armed soldiers stay alert for possible aggressions from the North.
One rainy evening, sergeant major Noh Seong-gyu is called to attend to an emergency. A massacre has occurred within GP506, leaving 20 dead ... |More
