Brief History of Independent Films Screened in Seoul

Representative works by 10 local independent filmmakers will be screened with English subtitles from Friday to July 12 at Seoul Arts Cinema.

The event, titled "Yesterday and Today (Ojewa Onol)", will show a total of 20 films in five days and also offer sessions in which directors talk about their works along with film critics and audiences at a cafe in the theater on July 11.

During the event, each director will introduce their two films, one from their early works and the most recent one.

It will be a good opportunity to see how each filmmaker's works have changed over the years and to check out how the trends of independent films have changed, organizers said.

The 10 directors include Choi Jin-seong, Kim Jong-kwan, Yoon Seong-ho, Park Chan-ok and Chegy.

Choi made a debut with a documentary film, which dealt with social problems and issues, but he has recently made a fiction film with touches of fantasy music.

Film festival aims to appeal to a broader audience with fewer esoteric offerings

Since the 1990s, Korea has given birth to a torrent of film festivals. Busan's international film festival is the most famous, but several Korean cities now put on festivals of their own, each with a distinctive style.
Gwangju, in South Jeolla province, joined the festival circuit in 2001, with the mission of showing "ultramodern and innovative" films, and has since gained a big following, from 8,000 in the first year to 45,000 last year. It is holding its fourth annual international film festival Thursday, which runs through Sept. 11.
The Gwangju festival has been known for its difficult-to-swallow art films, but this year, organizers are attempting to break free from its stereotype. The lineup is loaded with films that are both inviting and acclaimed, in accordance with its theme of "Voir, Revoir" (Discover, Rediscover).

Wide spectrum of Korean films invited to Vancouver

The 23rd edition of the Vancouver International Film Festival in Canada will feature a wide selection of Korean films in their "Dragons & Tigers: The Cinemas of East Asia" program, including two features in competition.

The two films that will compete for the Dragons & Tigers Award are Fade Into You by independent filmmaker Chegy and OH Myung-hoon's Sund@y Seoul, which was recently screened at the Locarno International Film Festival. A total number of nine features by first- and second-time directors from Asia make up the competition section.

The festival will also host a special "Tribute to LEE Sung-gang", the independent animator responsible for the award-winning feature My Beautiful Girl, Mari (2002). In addition to this film, the tribute will include various shorts by the director (including his most recent film Onuri, based on a Jeju Island creation myth) as well as music videos and his animated sequence for JANG Sung-woo's Timeless, Bottomless, Bad Movie.

Digital Film Festival Minds the Mainstream

It's still not quite mainstream, but Seoul Net & Film Festival (SeNef) is certainly trying. An annual event celebrating the experimental in film and video, this year's festival will make digital media accessible and fun for the general public. At the same time, it will present more works by recognizable names in the art film world than in previous years.

"Part of the festival's goal is to introduce various cinematic styles and innovations to a mainstream audience", Kim Ji-hoon, one of the festival's programmers, said during a news conference Wednesday. "It's important to find a balance between the mainstream and the minority".

SeNef is unique in that it takes place in both cyberspace and in the real world _ hence the festival's name.
