'Romantic Island' Loses Spark

The Christmas season boasts many holiday movies with plots about romance, family matters and even Santa and his elves. "Romantic Island" can be added to the love story category, as four young characters leave their tiring everyday lives, arrive at one of the most beautiful islands on earth and each start to discover new sides of themselves.

Jae-hyuk, played by deep voiced Lee Seon-gyoon, is a CEO but faces a layoff by the board of directors due to radical decisions and his straightforward personality. When informed of the death of his father, who left him to live with his Filipino wife and daughter, he doesn't flinch and leaves for the island to bid his father farewell.

Meanwhile, Su-jin, played by the bubbly Lee Soo-kyeong, flies to Boracay to escape her poor family and miserable workplace. She meets the seemingly rich Jae-hyuk and resolves to fix his sour attitude.

SONG Il-gon Horror to Shoot this Spring

Director SONG Il-gon is in pre-production on his latest project, an historical horror set in the Joseon Dynasty. The film is being budgeted at around US$4 million and is titled Sahwa – meaning 'royal massacre'. No word on who will star in the feature and casting is currently ongoing.

The production company behind the film is Masulpiri Co. which produced "Family Matters" (2006), "A Tale of Two Sisters" (2003), and JEONG Jae-eun's "Take Care of My Cat" (2001).

"Sahwa" is about a bloody power game between rival families. When the Park family massacres the Shin family, and takes the throne, a child, Wan, is born to them that very same night of the killings. Seven years later, an attack on the king's family leaves everyone but young Wan dead. Wan grows deadly ill, and the king tries to save him but curses, strange happenings, and mysterious murders draw nearer.

LEE Joon-ik's Joyful Life

Director LEE Joon-ik has announced his next project, reprising themes from his previous film "Radio Star" (2006). He is currently preparing to shoot "Joyful Life", a nostalgic tale about three unhappy middle-agers who, some 20 years ago, had a room-salon-touring rock band along with a fourth member. Reunited after the funeral of the fourth, they meet the son of their dead friend, and together form a new rock band to escape from their daily doldrums.

The main cast for the male-bonding movie will be JEONG Jin-yeong, star of LEE's mega-hit "The King and the Clown" (2005), KIM Yoo-seok of "Family Matters" (2006) and "The Isle" (2000) and KIM Sang-ho, known for various supporting roles, including in "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower") and "Between Love and Hate" ("The Unbearable Lightness of Dating") (2006).

7th Seoul Film Festival Starts Sept. 8

The 7th Seoul Net and Film Festival, known collectively as SENEF, will run this September 8 to 17 at venues in central Seoul. While the internet component of the festival has been running online since May, the newly named and expanded Seoul Film Festival will screen a diverse range of international films in both conventional and digital formats, along with a special selection of Korean films by first-time directors. Both the international and the Korean sections will offer cash awards of US$6000 and US$5000 respectively, with an international jury selecting the winners.

The opening film will be Turkish production Climates, by Cannes Grand Prix winning director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. A special section called 'Asia in Focus' will present six films from Asian countries including Taiwan, the Philippines, and Lebanon, as selected from 'Best 5'lists provided by several top Asian film critics and festival directors.
