The 11th Wisconsin Film Festival, held annually at the University of Wisconsin in the U.S., presents a 'Focus on South Korea' for its 2009 edition running April 2 – 5. Five critically acclaimed Korean features will screen during the event along with one Canadian-Korean short film.
Indie favorite "Daytime Drinking" by NOH Young-seok will screen, continuing its tour of international festivals after gaining attention at Jeonju, Busan and Toronto. Cannes winner "Secret Sunshine" by LEE Chang-dong, which won actress JEON Do-yeon a host of awards, was also selected. Rounding out the focus is Korean-American director KIM So-yong's second feature "Treeless Mountain", which won best film at Dubai Int'l Film Fest, and was the director's first shot entirely in Korea; HAN Jae-rim's sophomore effort, comic-drama "The Show Must Go On", starring SONG Kang-ho as a middling gangster; and Chinese-Korean director ZHANG Lu's second feature "Grain in Ear", which won the New Currents award at Pu...| More | |||||||||||
The Cinema Digital Seoul festival, (CinDi), now in its second year, kicked off August 20th with a weeklong supply of diverse digital films to Seoul's trendy Apgujeong district. The 2nd CinDi screens 71 films from 18 countries, including an impressive opening title, 24 City, the latest by China's award-winning art house maverick Jia Zhang Ke.
The festival boasts a competition section with 15 films selected this year, many from China's emerging film industry. Two Korean films made the selection; "The Dog of Chonggyecheon" by KIM Kyeong-mook, a surreal adventure in which a gender-confused young man meets a talking dog and is chased by a mysterious figure; and "Tropical" by LEE Sung-woo, about a Korean man who, 15 years earlier fled prosecution for murder by moving to the Philippines, and lives with his Filipino wife and 15 year old son. For the second year in a row, four Korean arthouse films will be presented to audiences in Japan through the Art Film Showcase in Tokyo. The eight-week series of screenings is sponsored by KOFIC and the Image Forum arthouse theater in Tokyo.
The showcase is an effort to introduce Japanese viewers to a wider spectrum of Korean cinema by presenting high quality works that would otherwise not receive a theatrical release in Japan. Each selected film will screen for two weeks in relay fashion. The Art Film Showcase 2008 will open on March 8 with a screening of JEON Soo-il's "With a Girl of Black Soil" (2007). The film originally premiered in the Horizons section of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Art Cinema CICAE Award and the Lina Mangiacapre Award. The 12th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) came to a close October 12 th after a 9 day run that drew a record-breaking attendance. An official tally of 198,603 admissions were taken during the event, up nearly 6000 from last year, while overall occupancy for screenings reached 75.8%. Both opening and closing films were sold out, with PIFF a total of 271 films from 65 countries.
Winners in the festival's only competitive section, New Currents, were announced at an award ceremony with 3 films sharing the honor, each winning US$30 000. Korean-Chinese director JIN Guang-hao won for his feature debut, the KOFIC-supported "Life Track" . Malaysian director Seng Tat LIEW won for his first feature "Flower in the Pocket", and Aditya ASSARAT of Thailand was awarded for his sophomore effort "Wonderful Town" .
