"Grain in Ear" is a coproduction betwen China and Korea.

Synopsis
Cui Shun-ji is a Chinese woman of Korean ancestry. A single mother bringing up a young son, she lives away from her hometown, and makes a living by selling kimchi. In the course of living her life, she meets three men who betray her. When her son dies in an accident, she decides to take revenge.

Art Film Showcase 2008 to screen in Japan

For the second year in a row, four Korean arthouse films will be presented to audiences in Japan through the Art Film Showcase in Tokyo. The eight-week series of screenings is sponsored by KOFIC and the Image Forum arthouse theater in Tokyo.

The showcase is an effort to introduce Japanese viewers to a wider spectrum of Korean cinema by presenting high quality works that would otherwise not receive a theatrical release in Japan. Each selected film will screen for two weeks in relay fashion.

The Art Film Showcase 2008 will open on March 8 with a screening of JEON Soo-il's "With a Girl of Black Soil" (2007). The film originally premiered in the Horizons section of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Art Cinema CICAE Award and the Lina Mangiacapre Award. The film tells the story of a single father who loses his job in a coal mine.

From the bleak wastelands of Mongolia come two heartwarming tales ― "Tuya's Marriage" and "Desert Dream" ― that speak about the incredible power of hope, courage and love in life. The 12th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) came to a close October 12 th after a 9 day run that drew a record-breaking attendance. An official tally of 198,603 admissions were taken during the event, up nearly 6000 from last year, while overall occupancy for screenings reached 75.8%. Both opening and closing films were sold out, with PIFF a total of 271 films from 65 countries.

Winners in the festival's only competitive section, New Currents, were announced at an award ceremony with 3 films sharing the honor, each winning US$30 000. Korean-Chinese director JIN Guang-hao won for his feature debut, the KOFIC-supported "Life Track" . Malaysian director Seng Tat LIEW won for his first feature "Flower in the Pocket", and Aditya ASSARAT of Thailand was awarded for his sophomore effort "Wonderful Town" . "Flower in the Pocket" also snagged the audience award, while the FIPRESCI award went to "The Red Awn" by CAI Shangjun of China.

Korean-Chinese director ZHANG Lu's third feature "Desert Dream" (Hyazgar), picked up the top prize at the 9th Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian & Arab Cinema held annually in New Delhi, India. The Korea-France co-production took home Best Picture in the Asian and Arab section at a July 29th awards ceremony, closing the fest's 10-day run.

"Desert Dream" is set in a small, drought threatened village on the Chinese-Mongolian border and revolves around a farmer obsessed with tree-planting to stave off desertification. After his neglected wife and child leave him, a North Korean woman refugee and her child, wandering across the desert, stay and settle with him. A wandering soldier also appears on the scene.

The 57th Berlin International Film Festival, which ended Sunday, selected two Korean films for their official competition. One was Park Chan-wook's "I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK". The other was a co-production that involved Korea, Mongolia and France and was titled "Hyazgar" ("Desert Dream").
The film, which was shot in Mongolia, delves into the relationship between a young woman and her son. They have settled in a rural village on the border between China and Mongolia, after defecting from North Korea. The third character is a man who plants trees in the desert and develops a relationship with the woman.
"Hyazgar" was directed by Zhang Lu, 45, a third-generation Korean-Chinese director whose debut was the award winning film "Grain in Ear", which was also the story of an ethnic Korean with a little son who carries on a relationship with a stranger out of desperation.
