“MARRY A VIETNAMESE LADY” The drama introduces lives of Eun-wu, a promising young doctor, Seok-wu, a 40-year-old bachelor who is as down to earth as savory soybean paste soup, and Tiv, a 21-year-old girl who comes to Korea in pursuit of Eun-wu’s love as an unintentional Vietnamese bride for Seok-wu, Eun-wu’s brother. At first glance, this drama seems to depict a love triangle between Tiv and the two brothers. However, it actually deals with the young doctor Eun-wu’s personal growth in love and life as he realizes the true meaning of life through Seok-wu and Tiv.

The first Seoul Drama Awards, an international award given to TV dramas produced worldwide, will be held August 29 at the KBS Hall in Seoul.

Organized by the Korean Broadcasters Association and sponsored by KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS and the Korean Broadcasting Commission, the ceremony has garnered significant attention for introducing the first international award for TV shows. Another noteworthy aspect is that the nation's three major terrestrial TV broadcasters have joined forces in establishing the award.

The organizers of the ceremony said the purpose of the ceremony is to publicize Korean TV dramas to the world and foreign TV dramas to Korea. The award will be given to TV shows produced not only in Asia but also in the United States and Europe.

Hosted by actor Ryoo Shi-won and anchors Hwang Su-kyung and Han Seok-jun, the first ceremony will be attended by a number of top stars, such as Kim Sun-ah and Choi Su-jong.

A total of 105 TV dramas from 29 countries will compete for th...| More

She is tough. She is energetic enough to love martial arts. Her provocative charm is more than evident in dance scenes from her latest movie, "Dasepo Girl". Her remarks on a TV show have invited a barrage of criticism. The name Kim Ok-bin is enough to draw the attention of virtually everyone.

She is very busy this summer being cast in a couple of differing roles. She stars in an MBC drama, "Over the Rainbow - Drama", as a would-be singer wish boyish charm. In the new movie, "Dasepo Girl", she plays a very cute, interesting high school student. I interviewed Kim, who always wears a big smile, on August 3 at NB, a club in Seocho-dong, Seoul.

She Loves Martial Arts –

In "Over the Rainbow - Drama", her role as Jeong Hee-soo is someone full of energy. Hee-soo is ashamed of neither her occasional wrong pronunciations nor her local accent. In real life, she is a third dan (or rank) in Hapgido and second dan in Taekwondo. She learned Muay Thai and boxing for fun.

This is the eighth in a series of articles about rising stars who are expected to stand out in the coming year. - Ed.

By Shin Hae-in

Maybe even God would do anything for actress Kim Ok-bin, the angelic heroine of TV drama "Hello, God". But right now, instead of a prayer for success and fame, the 20-year-old actress probably wants to ask the Almighty for a nice long nap.

In less than a year after stepping into the entertainment world, Kim has become one of the busiest actresses in Korea.

Playing the heroine Eun-hye in KBS primetime drama "Hello, God", Kim has been following a tight shooting schedule which allows her less than two hours of sleep each day.

Unable to cope with the work, Kim fainted during a recent shoot and was sent to the hospital immediately. But with the shooting on hold waiting for the heroine to return, Kim could not even allow herself to rest on the hospital bed for more than a few hours. "I'm fine, really", the actress told reporters who had rushed to...| More

SBS's Special Commemorative K-Drama "Bride From Hanoi" Yet Another K-Classic by ffwee001`

G
reetings From Singapore and Wishing One & All A Happy & Prosperous Year Ahead 2007

It is commendable that SBS lends a helping hand and shares its talents by producing this special 2-part series shot in Hanoi and Korea to commemorate the end of the Vietnam War, its 30th Anniversary a collaborative project perhaps which includes Vietnamese cast.

Sincerely hope that in the near future such projects would also extend to other Asian countries by helping us tell our stories as I believe that K-Dramas have set the industry standards in drama/movie productions.

Besides the beautiful locations shooting on the landmarks of Hanoi, the Korean cast also made efforts to learn to speak Vietnamese language too !

The philosophy/life skill imparted in this storyline is I discovered - "marriage is about buying a pair of shoes: you should have the right to choose a pair you feel comfortable and not to be over duly concerned about how people feel about it".

I'm deeply impressed as usual by K-Drama scripts, the writer whose hidden message and impact to me is not so much on the romance between the lead actor and lead actress but rather the impact of their romance on the lead actor's elder brother and his sweetheart love - a girl from the same hometown and better qualified than the elder brother who was a farmer.

The exciting part is both brothers "fell for the same Vietnamese girl" and when the elder brother returned to Korea with a future Hanoi bride under a matchmaking programme organised by the Korean government, the younger doctor brother was shocked to see his Hanoi girlfriend whom he lost contact due to man-made circumstances....................

The elder brother had yet to consummate their marriage but the trip to Korea was regarded more of an exploratory trip for the future bride to consider marrying him. Her apprearance created tension to all and enabled the elder brother's sweetheart to re-discover the wholesome character of the elder brother who had always put her in his heart until he had to give in to their mother's persistent pressures to find a spouse.

Happy ending for both brothers as elder brother's perpetual sweetheart began to see him from a human perspective rather than by qualifications (case of a woman marrying down) and through the Hanoi Bride's "counselling" she managed to gather her courage/will to accept him while the younger doctor brother returned to Hanoi to look for his "lost pair of shoes" !(case of a man marrying a woman of lower social status as his mother initially objected strongly to this marriage as she preferred his lady doctor colleague - scolding his younger son for not choosing a diamond in front of him !

I find that I can connect very well with the values, thoughts, mindsets and concerns aired by the parents' characters which mirros the way we also think when choosing a life partner to an extent at least for our generation.

Please watch when you have the chance !

Best regards,

Wee Fong-Fong (Miss)
