"Forever the Moment", a sports film revolving around the Korean women's national handball team, has become the first hit of 2008 at the Korean box office, debuting at No. 1 and taking in US $5.3 million in weekend ticket sales. Initially opening January 10th on 410 screens nationwide, the film expanded over the next five days to 494 screens as word-of-mouth bolstered turn-out.

Its success confirms the directing talent of LIM Soon-rye, who has returned to feature filmmaking after a six year hiatus. Both her debut effort "Three Friends" (1996) and her second feature "Waikiki Brothers" (2001) were critical favorites, with the latter spawning a cult following and a musical adaptation.

"Forever the Moment" boasts a strong ensemble cast of actresses headed by MOON So-ri ("Oasis") and KIM Jeong-eun ("Mission Sex Control"). It is distributed locally by Sidus FNH and produced by MK Pictures. Hong Kong based Network is handling international sales.

The Asian Film Market was again bustling in its second year although buyers tended to window-shop and take notes for later. A number of Korean films were picked up mainly for TV/DVD rights. Korean sales agent Cineclick Asia sealed a number of deals, selling all rights to KIM Ki-duk's "Breath" to Saudi Arabia-based Ghassan Production and Distribution for the Middle Eastern territories.

The company also picked up DVD/TV rights to KIM's "The Bow" and "3-Iron", along with "Family Ties" ("The Birth of a Family"), "Red Shoes", "Fighter in the Wind", "Love Me Not", "Seducing Mr. Perfect", and KIM Ji-woon's "A Tale of Two Sisters" from Cineclick. More TV rights went to Japan's Nettai Museum for horror films "The Red Shoes" and "Acacia" along with "The Wolf Returns" and "Mission Sex Control". Meanwhile Hungary's Cinetel bought TV/VOD/Video rights to KIM Ki-duk's "Samaria", "Red Shoes", and "A Tale of Two Sisers".

Actress Sin Eun-kyeong, 34, and her ex-husband Kim Jung-soo visited Seoul Family Court last Friday to file a divorce document, officially marking the end to their four years of marriage. Kim was the head of an entertainment company, "Good Player", which used to be Sin's agency.
The two wed in September 2003 and the following year Sin gave birth to a child who is now three years old.
Their marriage started to face trouble last June when Kim illegally used Sin's private seal to misappropriate 400 million won ($424,800) for his entertainment company. Sin noted the lack of trust in the relationship.
According to a source close to the couple, the divorce is due to personality differences and economic troubles.
Kim was short of funds while producing two films, "Mission Sex Control" and "Between Love and Hate" ("The Unbearable Lightness of Dating"), last year. He also had financial trouble in promoting a merger with Fantom Entertainment group.

The 21st Fukuoka Asian Film Festival opens June 29th and will run through July 8th in Fukuoka, Japan. This film festival started in 1987 to discover and nurture new filmmakers from all over Asia. This year, 14 films from nine nations will be introduced at the festival.

Korea will present four films: "Radio Star" starring the venerable Ahn Seong-gi and Park Joong-hoon and directed by Lee Joon-ik, the maker of one of Korea's highest grossing films "The King and the Clown"; "Cheaters" by director Park Seong-beom; the heart-warming "Ice Bar", starring young actor Park Ji-bin; and the comical "Mission Sex Control" featuring the cute couple Lee Beom-soo and Kim Jeong-eun.

An interview on Korea's enigmatic director Kim Ki-duk conducted by French film critic Antoine Coppola will be presented at the festival. The directors of the Korean films also plan to attend Q&A session following the showings of their films to answer questions from the audience....

In 1962, the Korean government launched a national campaign aimed at the country's rural development and initiated by former president Park Chung Hee. A significant portion of its government funds were used to educate and support family planning programs by distributing free contraceptive pills, condoms and other contraceptive services to citizens.
"Mission Sex Control", the title of a film about the government's family planning services of the period, is an actual catchphrase from the campaign song for what was called "a new village movement".
The story follows Hyun-ju (Kim Jeong-eun), a family planning counsellor hired by the government facing a backlash from feudal society when she is dispatched to a small rural village that has the highest population growth in the country. Her mission is to cut the village's fertility rate to two children per household.
