Even before K-pop, Filipinos were long fans of imported dramas.

Soap operas and drama series have become a staple for daytime and primetime viewing in the Philippines.

In the 1990s, Mexican telenovelas became the mania, with huge hits like "Rosalinda" and "Marimar" attracting ratings above 50 percent.

Asian dramas, including Korean, have become hits in the 2000s.

The huge demand from viewers for Asian telenovelas has prompted Philippine TV stations to import Korean and Taiwanese dramas.

Top Korean drama series (locally called "Koreanovelas") like "Lovers in Paris", "Full House", "My Name is Kim Sam-soon", "Stairway to Heaven" and "Coffee Prince" were imported and dubbed in Filipino, instantly becoming hits.

The success of "Dae Jang Geum" (or "Jewel in the Palace") in Korea was also replicated in the Philippines and many other Asian countries.

The Taiwanese drama "Meteor Garden" was also a ratings success when it ai...| More

'King & Clown' star talks about his rise to celebrity, and fall back to earth

There are certain things you might expect when meeting a star actor: crazy good looks, fabulous lifestyle and, perhaps, a bit of attitude.

Such was this reporter's expectation before an exclusive interview with Korean actor Lee Joon-ki on a recent afternoon. Lee, once a young and struggling actor from the port city of Busan, was catapulted to stardom with his impressive portrayal of an androgynous clown in the 2005 hit film "The King and the Clown".

Today, Lee is ranked as one of Korea's biggest box office draws. The few films he has made have attracted almost 20 million people, according to the latest figures.

This puts the 27-year-old actor on par with some of Korea's most successful veterans, like Song Kang-ho, Seol Kyeong-gu and Ahn Seong-gi.

Yes. The looks were there, although many would agree that Lee's androgynous features aren't what you would call typical, bordering somewhere between m...| More

Actor Lee Joon-ki plans to go on a U.S. tour in the latter half of this year, following the ones in China, Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong. Lee's agency says that a detailed schedule is being worked out now and it's coordinating the event so that his overseas activities wouldn't be in conflict with his domestic ones.

Known for his amazing acting performance in the film "The King and the Clown" and dramas "My Girl" and "Iljimae", Lee has his own fan clubs in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and other countries. When he was in Indonesia for some volunteer work recently, the international airport there was paralyzed with Lee's screaming fans. His immense popularity overseas has motivated his agency to host a world tour.

Lee has a fan concert planned for April 18 at the Olympic Park in Seoul. The concert titled "Episode 2" will be the foundation for his world tour. Meanwhile, he has left for Thailand on Thursday to model for Korean designer Andre Kim in a fashion show celebrating the 50th ...| More

State-run broadcaster KBS is greeting the New Year with not one but two dramas: a remake of the iconic classic "Boys over Flowers" and the epic "The Iron Empress".

Historical romance "The Iron Empress" hatches its 80-episode-long tale tomorrow night, spicing up the Goryeo Dynasty with the bloody escapades of a warrior woman played by veteran actress Chae Si-ra.

Chae, the feline beauty who enchanted and frightened audiences in KBS' "Emperor of the Sea" (2004), reprises her role as a ruthless Amazon in the upcoming drama.

"Men have been playing the lead in historical romances", said Chae, 40, at a press conference held on Dec. 19. "Now, I think it is time for women to do so. This drama will show people that there was an awesome and brave female leader during the Goryeo Dynasty".

Fearsome would be a more accurate description of the heroine, who is aptly called the Iron Empress. The fourth wife of Goryeo Dynasty founder Taejo Wanggeon, the empress ruled as the regent for her so...| More

Contract marriage? The couple won’t live in the same room. In the end, they actually will anyway. Contract dating? Why be shy when you’re going to date anyways? What? Contract siblings? That is quite something if you ask me. However, there is one bizarre contract between two couples. Her major is creative writing (overflowing with lies), double majoring in acting (nice looking face with exceptional acting skills), minor major in broadcast entertainment (wonderful showmanship with quick agility of wit).

Joo Yu-rin has an imprudent European attitude with full capability to do anything along with her good looks. There’s also Seol Gong-chan, a mighty fortunate man, who could handle any business of his own that he wants. There cannot be a more fatal chance of meeting than the one they have; nonetheless they get make a “contract sibling” agreement perhaps by their will or not. However, the two must join forces to go through the hardship that they must face…

There’s another couple that get involved. Jung-woo who is a free-loving person, and Gong-chan’s past sweetheart, Se-hyun, a famous Korean sports star. Jung-woo gets quite frustrated by Yu-rin who keeps escaping from him, and Se-hyun keeps thinking of her past sweetheart, Gong-chan and can’t seem to let him go. Despite the small fights, the loving feelings that suddenly arise between Gong-chan and Yu-rin, and Jung-woo and Se-hyun’s love for them. What would happen between these four?

My (mischievous) girl by Frey

W
hat would you do with a playful-adorable girl?
Well, this drama tells a unique love story for me. Joo Yoo Rin seems so mischievous and sometimes impulsive, yet kind and jolly. I think My Girl has a strong plot with strong characters as well. I love how the story leads to the chemistry between Joo Yoo Rin (Lee Da Hae) and Seol Gong Chan (Lee Dong Wook). They're pretty great in becoming partners on screen. For Lee Dong Wook, I can say nothing besides, he's so cool! I mean it! Since I've watched another movies by Lee Dong Wook and get nothing special, watching this drama gives me a good impression about Lee Dong Wook.
Seo Jeong Woo's character by Lee Jun Gi also captivates my attention. I love his character apart from being a player of love. LOL! Jeong Woo is a nice man, actually. But I dislike his appearance, too much for his hair.
And the only thing that bothers me is Yoo Rin costumes. I've no idea for a poor girl like her looks so bright, luxurious and colorful in clothes and make up. That's too much. Above all, I love this drama coz it has a good ending!

My kind of series by Rogue

T
he plot was surprisingly good - the kind in which anything can happen. You can put as many conflicts and twists as your imagination can conceive. You can totally control the outcome of the drama and, if you're feeling a bit playful, throw your viewers a curve ball by coming up with a really tragic ending. The stark contrast between a hilarious beginning and a desolate finale would have this series next to those having thoroughly unpredictable conclusions that you probably wouldn't like yet can't help but admire for their artistry and bravery. Not to worry though...you don't get that kind in this series. I'm just driving home the point that the unraveling of the plot was skillfully done in such a way that the writer can insert as many twists as he wants in an attempt to prolong the drama and still have his viewers seriously hooked. That's how good the plot is. I guess he realizes this too, as seen from the bit when Jo Kye Hyeong and Hwang Bo Ra, who play brother and sister in this series, talk of how Yoo Rin's and Gong Chan's situation is so like the movies and they begin conjuring possible scenarios between the two.

Now, the actors. I'm only going to talk about the ones that matter, namely, Lee Dong Wook (Seol Gong Chan), Lee Da Hae (Joo Yoo Rin), Lee Joon Ki (Seo Jung Woo) and Park Si Yeon (Kim Seo Hyun). I give props to the production company for casting such good-looking actors in one drama. Acting-wise, a little polish would be nice. But this drama is of that kind wherein the actors' portrayals of their characters are somewhat off in the beginning, but they grow on you. So, in retrospect, it was alright.

Lee Da Hae had the energy to get the scene going and for that I admire her. She can shift from comedy to drama with ease. Although there were times when her energy was just too much for me, as mentioned earlier, the antics grow on you and I found it to be quite cute in the long run.

Lee Dong Wook seemed a bit stiff in the beginning, it felt like his movements were somewhat calculated. In his fear to exaggerate, he ended up holding everything in. It was a little tiring to see him frown all throughout that I was relieved to see that he could smile...and he has quite a nice smile. He sure can portray the arrogance required of the role, and in those few comedic and poignant moments, he shone. Needless to say, after this series, I am now a fan.

Lee Joon Ki's character, Jung Woo, was too melodramatic in this series for my tastes. So he loves Yoo Rin, but the story came out quite short with these two characters. It didn't look like the two had established a deep relationship to warrant Jung Woo shedding tears for Yoo Rin. Had the story betwen them been shown with depth, I would commend the tears. But as it were, it didn't feel that way, so easy on the drama. The hurt expressions were fine; the tears, a bit inflated.

find Park Si Yeon really pretty. I was confused with her facial expressions though. There were scenes wherein she carried the same expression all throughout, it was rather difficult to fathom what she really felt at the moment.

Admittedly, I enjoyed the drama, from the plot down to the performance. It was deliciously light, even the drama bit wasn't that heavy. It had the makings of a series that you'd want to watch over and over again: pleasant comedy, enjoyable banter, repressed passion, and a healthy serving of drama.

I would have gone right ahead and gave this series a 10, but I'll leave the last point for improvements. So here's a well-deserved 9 snow globes out of 10.

Not all Korean celebs can do this kind of drama. No wonder it’s a success and a lot of people love it! I would want to watch it again and again… and still find myself crying in the same scenes…Fighting!
The best Korean TV series so far (among the tons of asian tv series I watched)! Crazy as it may seem but I even downloaded its OST. Lee Da Hae and Lee Dong Wook looks great together! There’s chemistry. All the characters did great acting!
