Seven Days writer takes helm for Secret (Source) 2009/12/04
Scenario writer YOON Jae-goo makes his feature film directorial debut with "Secret - 2009". YOON stays in familiar territory and wrote another inventive thriller which he directed himself this time.

YOON told journalists that "Seven Day" and "Secret - 2009" are intended to be the first two films of a four films series revolving around the theme 'saving'.

CHA Seung-won plays a police detective in Secret who will try to save his wife (SONG Yoon-ah). She is the likely perpetrator in the murder case he is investigating.

In "Seven Days", Lost actress KIM Yoon-jin tries to save her daughter from her kidnappers. The future two films of the saving series will deal with saving a friend and saving the earth.

CHA is an inspired choice for the conflicted detective considering his latest roles in "Blood Rain", A Day with my Son", and "Eye for an Eye". He originally started out in comic roles in his early career like "My Teacher, Mr.Kim". SONG was previously seen in "Face" and "Arang"... |More

Star Power Reigns Big Screen

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

This year, a long lineup of star-studded movies, both homegrown and Hollywood imports, awaits release with Korea's hottest stars and bona fide actors gracing the silver screen throughout 2008.

While a high profile cast hasn't always guaranteed a sellout, it would be hard to walk past movie posters featuring top stars.

The New Year starts off with a bang. Jeon Ji-hyeon (also known as Gianna Jun) makes her long-awaited comeback after a two-year hiatus opposite Hwang Jeong-min in "A Man Who Was Superman", to open across theaters Jan. 31.

The movie garnered attention by butchering down Jeon's "wholesome" image for the role of a chain-smoking, tomboyish filmmaker. Meanwhile, fans are anxious to see how Hwang will pull off his interesting role as an unconventional Superman.

The red poster of "Hellcats" features three female stars representing their own generation: 47-year-old actress Lee Mi-sook ("Untold Scandal",... |More

'Rivals' Is Funny With Clumsy Story (Source) 2007/03/29
By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

You might think that the new comedy "Small Town Rivals" was made by those who ought to know the ingredients of a good comedy.

In his new film, director Jang Gyoo-seong, who has shown talent in such previous hit comedies as "My Teacher, Mr.Kim" (2003) and "Lovely Rivals" (2004), teams up with veteran actors Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin _ well known for their comic performances in the past.

Cha and Yu don't deliver anything especially new _ they are quite comfortable in such roles with Cha playing a corruptive teacher in "My Teacher, Mr.Kim" and Yoo a talkative gambler in "Tazza: High Roller" ("The War of Flower" - 2006). But the two combined to produce satisfying results, eliciting bursts of laughter from audiences in this new film _ a story about rivalry and friendship between two old friends.

But the director may have tried too hard to be smart and ambitious in this movie. He unsuccessfully tries to weave heavy issues, such as politics, int... |More
[MOVIE REVIEW] 'Small Town Rivals' puts comic twist on friendship (Source) 2007/03/22
Rivalry is a double-edged sword: It can be a bitter yet healthy pill to accelerate sound competition, or it can cut into a formerly amicable relationship, driving a wedge between friends.

Either way, rivalry is an interesting theme for filmmakers, and director Jang Gyoo-seong has attempted to dissect what underlies a bittersweet competition between close friends in his latest flick "Small Town Rivals (Yijanggwa gunsu)".

The Korean title offers a clue about the film's structure. "Yijang" refers to the head of a small town, a nominal title that does not carry much public authority. "Gunsu", meaning magistrate, is one of the highest positions in a provincial government. Their gap is as wide as, well, the stylistic discrepancy between Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin.

Cha is widely recognized as Korea's fashion icon. In fact, he used to be a top-rated fashion model. Yoo does not have such fashionable credentials because his strength lies in comic roles that do not require good looks ... |More

Kim Bong-doo, a 'popular' elementary school teacher in Seoul, is a problem teacher who comes late to school more than the students, and is scolded by the principal everyday. He likes drinking better than preparing his courses, and he actively encourages and coaxes parents to offer money in exchange for his favoring their children. But one day, he finally gets caught in his own act, and gets transferred to a school in the boondocks.

Kim Bong-doo gets driven away to a school in the countryside, where cell phones are useless and even buying cigarettes at the nearest corner store is out of the question. There are only five students in the whole school, and he's also discontent with the extremely naive villagers who offer him all sorts of vegetables and fruits instead of money.
Independent-study in 1st period, art in 2nd period, P.E. in 3rd period...
Mr. Kim idles his time waiting for the day to return to Seoul as quickly as possible.
To make matters worse, a grumpy old man named Mr. Choi begs him to teach him the Korean alphabet, which makes Mr. Kim's life in the country even gloomier.

Mr. Kim, who waits for the chance to return to Seoul, maps out a plan to transfer all of his students to Seoul and to close the school down. For starters, Mr. Kim begins an after-school program to focus on developing each student's special talents so that they'll want to get a better education in Seoul. Contrary to his bad intentions, the villagers and school officials reconsider their policy of closing down the school because of Mr. Kim's wonderful devotion to the kids.

But when there's a will there's a way for Kim Bong-doo. A businessman unexpectedly shows up and says he'd like to turn the school into a survival game site, and because of him, Mr. Kim tastes the power of money again, which he had forgotten for a while.

Will the senseless and good-for-nothing teacher Mr. Kim Bong-doo ever succeed in going back to Seoul?
