The Seoul Ani Cinema, which opened on late Jan. 19 with a view of activating domestic animation, releases 'New Royal Secret Commissioner', a phantasie animation, during three weeks from Feb. 17 again.

An official of the Seoul Ani Cinema said, "New Royal Secret Commissioner' release once more will become a happy news for juveniles as well as a whole raft of manias who love animation".

Animation 'New Royal Secret Commissioner' is based on the original cartoon, whose separate volume sale has gained an astonishing result amounting to 2 million copies.

This animation also is a film that attracted animation manias' attention by being screened in Korea and Japan on Nov. 26, 2004 simultaneously.

Admission is 4,000 won for adults and 3,000 won for students. Internet advance sale also is possible.

With the unprecedented commercial success of local films in recent years, international studios are showing more and more interest in co-production projects with Korean movie companies.

"The number of co-productions is definitely on the increase," said Soh Eun-sook, staff at the international promotion department of the Korean Film Council, a government agency for promoting local movies. "Thanks to improvements in the quality of Korean movies and `Hallyu (Korean Wave),' many international film companies want to work with domestic movie makers."

Foreign companies want not only to invest money but also actively participate in the actual production of movies, but the types of co-production vary from one film to another, and are becoming much more complicated compared to those of the past, Soh said.

A battle among a string of blockbuster animations slated for release is expected to heat up in local theaters this winter. Local moviegoers will have a variety of interesting films to choose from this winter, including a local animation opening this weekend, which is set to go against some strong competition from Hollywood and Japan.

"Sinamhaengosa (Phantom Master _ Dark Hero From Ruined Empire - New Royal Secret Commissioner)," co-produced by local and Japanese animation companies, will greet audiences on Nov. 26. The box-office race among the animated works will get fierce later in the season when Walt Disney's "The Incredibles" is released on Dec. 15, Warner Bros.' "The Polar Express" and Miyazaki Hayao's "Howl's Moving Castle" on Dec. 24 and DreamWorks' "Shark Tale" on Jan. 17.

Animation New Royal Secret Commissioner, jointly-produced by Korea and Japan, will be screened simultaneously in the two countries on November 26.

New Secret Commissioner is based on a comic book by Yang Gyeong-il and Yoon In-wan that features materials and characters from Korea's classic literatures such as Secret Royal Commissioner, Chunhyang, and Heo Jun. The comic book is currently being serially published on Young Champ of Korea and Sunday GX of Japan. 8 series parts are published in paperback, of which 2 million copies have been sold in Korea and Japan.

The main character Munsu is the secret royal commissioner of a country on its ruin called Jushin. Munsu punishes evil men and groups that harm the countrymen using his position throughout the storyline.

There are many movies being produced based on popular comics. Old Boy, which received the Grand Jury Prize at the recent the Cannes International Film Festival, has heated this trend. There are some teen number of movies based on comics in production or in preparation for production.

Daeweon CI recently announced that the company finalized the contract for the movie production of Island by Yang Gyeong-il and Yoon In-wan with Lee's Film.
