As of March 5th, 2006 local box-office winner The King and the Clown broke all previous records and surged past the 11.74 million admissions mark held by Taegugki, to become the most successful Korean film of all time.

The gay-themed film is being called Korea's Brokeback Mountain, and has remained in the top three at the box office since its release on Dec. 29, 2005.

The King and the Clown is to get the royal treatment as the English international version of the film is underway and is being translated by one of Korea's foremost scholars and public philosophers, Kim Yong-Ok, whose pen-name is Do-ol (meaning 'stone').

Dr. Kim is professor emeritus at Sunchon National University and the author of numerous books on philosophy, religion and art. He has translated English philosophy into Korean and has also published a three-volume account of his interview with the Dalai Lama.

SEOUL, March 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean movie workers launched a 24-hour sit-in in downtown Seoul on Monday, intensifying their protest against the government's free trade deal with the United States on domestic movies.

Seoul announced in January it would cut short the number of days on which domestic movies must be screened in local theaters. The Cabinet will likely confirm the policy when ministers meet Tuesday.

About 50 movie workers started a collective sit-in near the crowded intersection of Gwanghwamun. Their action followed a protest by farmers in front of the nearby foreign ministry building, where Seoul and Washington started preparatory FTA talks earlier in the day.

Many actors may be merely remembered as anonymous characters who stand in the shadow of big stars in popular movies. But it is also true that some actors have a chance to step out of the shadow and sparkle by themselves.

In the upcoming local comedy films, veteran actors who have long taken supporting roles and spiced up their movies with their hilarious jokes and acting are now ready to show off their charms taking their first main role.
