Seong Baek-hyeob and Jo Bong-Nam recipients of the First Shindonghyeon Animation Awards

Director Seong Baek-hyeob and the late producer Jo Bong-Nam were named as the winners of the first Shindonghyeon Animation Awards.

The Animation Society of Korea (Chair: Lee, Sang-Won) announced on Nov. 6 that it had selected director Seong and the late producer Cho as the first Shindonghyeon Animation Awardees in the artist and special categories.

Director Seong first gained public renown with his TV animation series "White Baekgu" (2000) and became one of the most respected Korean animation directors, receiving the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France with his work "Oseam" (2003), an animation for theater. He has recently worked as an executive director of "Princess Bari", a full-length animation set to premiere in theaters next year.

Consolidating the distribution network: the most urgent task for the development of Korean animation

"Korea's short animation, as you can see from 'Bakkom', is world-class. If it produces a star director like Miyazaki Hayao, the global demand for Korean animation will soar", Jean Poulot, an internationally renowned claymation director, stressed in the Planning & Creation Academy's Integrated Lecture at the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA,CEO: Suh, Byung-Moon) last December 14.

Director Poulot had worked 12 years for Will Vinton Studio in the U.S. as an animation designer and director, and received an Emmy for the TV series "Claymation Easter". Currently, he is a guest professor at the Claymation program of Kookmin University.

Poulot also briefly discussed the following matters: the importance of establishing a distribution system in the Korean animation industry, complementary elements of Korean storytelling, and the present and future of Korean short animation.

Korean films 06 in London

London will host the free Korean film 06 from September 27 till October 1. The programmed films range from animations for children to comedies to dramas. The venue is the Odeon Covent Garden at Shaftsbury Avenue in the heart of London.

Among the selected films are popular films like the feel-good comedy Welcome to Dongmakgol, a favorite of the Korean audience in 2005. PARK Kwang-hyeon helmed "Welcome to Dongmakgol" and the film depicts soldiers from different sides ending up at the remote village Dongmakgol and its somehow deviant residents during the Korean War.

Other selected fare includes the critically acclaimed "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and "Crying Fist". "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" director PARK Chan-wook gained international recognition with his 'vengeance trilogy' and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is the last installment of the trilogy. RYOO Seung-wan's "Crying Fist" is a renowned boxing drama with one of Korea's leading actors CHOI Min-sik.

Korean Films at Shanghai Int. Film Festival

A record 11 Korean features will be shown in the official selection of this years 9th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) to take place June 17th to the 25th. Among them PARK Jin-pyo's 2005 film You Are My Sunshine will run in the official competition section for the Jin Jue Award. Another Korean film, Jo Chang-ho's The Peter Pan Formula has been selected as a candidate for the Asian New Talent Award.

Two Korean directors KWAK Gyeong-Taek ("Friend", "Typhoon") and BONG Joon-ho ("The Host", "Memories of Murder") have been invited to sit on the Jin Jue Award jury which will this year be presided over by French director Luc Besson. Other directors on the jury include Stanly Kwan and Gabriella Salvatores.

EBS's sex educational animation, The Birds & The Bees - A Secret You Shouldn't Keep, won the Grand Prize in the Educational, Scientific, or Industrial category at the 2006 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, often considered the 'Cannes of Animation'.

EBS announced on June 12 that its animation, The Birds and The Bees - A Secret You Shouldn't Keep (25 min) was invited to the Educational, Scientific, or Industrial category and received the Grand Prize at the 2006 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which concluded last June 10.

Dealing with sexual harassment toward children, The Birds and The Bees - A Secret You Shouldn't Keep, the third in the trilogy of sex education animation for children, The Birds and The Bees, co-produced by EBS, Character Plan Co., Ltd., and Miracle, was broadcast in Korea in June last year.
