New HONG Sang-soo film starts shooting in Paris

Well-known director HONG Sang-soo has opened shooting on his eighth film, which will be 80% set in Paris.

Titled Bam-gwa nat in Korean, which translates as "Night and Day", the film centers around a painter who takes an unexpected trip to Paris and encounters various people there. Actor Kim Yeong-ho ("Phantom the Submarine", "Spin Kick") takes the lead role, and he will be joined in the cast by TV actress HWANG Soo-jeong ("Heo Jun") as his wife and PARK Eun-hye ("Dae Jang Geum") as an art major studying in Paris.

The film will be produced by b.o.m. Film Productions, which also produced HONG's last film Woman on the Beach. Shooting opened on August 8 and is expected to last until the end of September.

HONG Sang-soo made his debut in 1996, and is considered one of Korea's most acclaimed arthouse directors. His fifth and sixth films "Woman is the Future of Man" and "Tale of Cinema" screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and 2005.

Actress, Director to Wed on Christmas Eve

Actress Moon So-ri (32) and director Jang Joon-hwan (36) will be taking their vows at a Christmas eve ceremony next month. According to Star News, the two families have concluded formal introductions and will hold the ceremony at an undisclosed location in Gyeonggi Province. The two are both alums of Sungkyunkwan University. Fate brought them together for a music video in 2003 that Jang was directing and Moon starred in. They have been dating seriously for the last year. The two kept their wedding plans secret even from close acquaintances. It is understood that the ceremony will be a quiet one, with just 20-30 family members in attendance.

Korean movies thrive on nationalism as five of the 10 recent box-office local movies deal with nationalistic themes.

Heavy on anti-Japanese sentiment or rather on anti-foreign forces sentiment, "Hanbando (Korean Penisula)" is the latest among the nationalism-tinged films that have become box office hits.

Among the 10 most viewed films of all time, five deal with nationalistic issues: "TaeGukGi: The Brotherhood War" (2004), "Welcome to Dongmakgol" (2005), "Silmido" (2004), "Shiri" (1999) and "JSA - Joint Security Area" (2000).

Despite concerns over the film's controversial theme, "Hanbando" ranked top at the box office this week, dethroning hitherto Hollywood blockbusters such as "Superman Returns", and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" from local movie theaters.
