Art Film Showcase 2008 to screen in Japan

For the second year in a row, four Korean arthouse films will be presented to audiences in Japan through the Art Film Showcase in Tokyo. The eight-week series of screenings is sponsored by KOFIC and the Image Forum arthouse theater in Tokyo.

The showcase is an effort to introduce Japanese viewers to a wider spectrum of Korean cinema by presenting high quality works that would otherwise not receive a theatrical release in Japan. Each selected film will screen for two weeks in relay fashion.

The Art Film Showcase 2008 will open on March 8 with a screening of JEON Soo-il's "With a Girl of Black Soil" (2007). The film originally premiered in the Horizons section of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Art Cinema CICAE Award and the Lina Mangiacapre Award. The film tells the story of a single father who loses his job in a coal mine.

Korean Cinema to Open in Japan

A cinema exclusively for Korean films will open in Shibuya, Japan, in mid-October.

The decision to establish the Korean movie theater came after the Korean Film Council and Japan's art theater Image Forum agreed to screen non-mainstream Korean films for 12 weeks a year.

According to the KFIC on Thursday, the two Korean films "The Barley Harvest Season" and "Possible Changes" were selected as the first works to be screened at the cinema.

Image Forum, which is in charge of promoting the Korean movies in Japan, will soon launch full-fledged marketing activities, including hosting a press preview in mid-July. Technical work needed for the Japanese release, such as dubbing and printing, has been completed.

KFIC official Park Deok-ho said that the two movies' directors and performers plan to visit Japan for promotional activities prior to the release.

Korean films "Grain in Ear" (co-produced with China) and Possible Changes have been selected to received a release in Japan under a special agreement between KOFIC and the Tokyo-based Image Forum theater. The films are scheduled to reach Japanese audiences in mid-October.

On April 5, KOFIC signed a contract with Image Forum to exclusively present Korean arthouse films over a 12 week period. Located in the Shibuya District, Image Forum has developed a strong following among Japanese audiences over the years for its championing of arthouse and avant garde filmmaking.

This latest initiative is intended to present Japanese audiences with a more diverse view of Korean cinema, given that much of the Hallyu boom in Japan is centered around a limited number of young stars.

'Long and Winding Road' Loses Audience Along the Way

Ko Du-sim plays a woman in her 70s who sets out on a long journey to attend her daughter's wedding in "Long and Winding Road".

They take care of their family, are busy with all the housework and work on the farm all day long. Mothers have no choice but to sacrifice everything for their family's happiness.

The latest feature film "Long and Winding Road (Omma)" sheds light on this venerable notion of motherhood, which may be a synonym for "sacrifice" in the family.

But the film falls short of moving audiences. It feels more pedantic than sentimental, so it is not even a typical tearjerker.

Directed by Koo Seong-joo, the film revolves around a woman in her 70s, who sets out on a long journey to attend her youngest daughter's wedding. But because of her carsickness, she has to walk for four days with some of her family members.

Min Byeong-Gook's new film explores the dark underpinnings of casual sex

Mun Ho (Jeong Chan), left, and Jong Gyu (Kim Yoo-Seok) are fated to be part of a bizarre ménage-a-trois.

You're a stewardess on an airplane. A passenger casually lifts lint off of your backside in a forward manner and tells you you're very pretty. You embarrassedly thank him and run off.

You're eating your noodle lunch in a restaurant. The man at the table next to you suddenly moves over and strikes up a conversation. Within minutes, he's swiping bites out of your food as his friend chats you up. They seem nice, so what do you do? Why, have a ménage-a-trois with them in a sleazy love hotel, of course.

That illustrates the running theme of Min Byeong-Gook's "Possible Changes": At any time, in any place, sex is imminent. What that sex stands for and how real it is, is where the film has its fun.
