Actor Ahn Seong-gi received Wednesday the Culture prize at the13th Nikkei Asia Award in Japan. Awarded by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japan Economic Times), one of Japan's largest media corporations, it is given to those who contribute to enhancing the lives of Asians.

The 56-year-old was recognized for his efforts to promote and protect Korean cinema. The star of "Silmido" (2003) was also recognized for supporting joint film projects among Korea, Japan and China. One such film is "Battle of Wits" (2006), a big budget epic movie starring An and Andy Lau and directed by Julian Cheung.

Launched in 1996, the Nikkei Asia Award has three prizes: Culture, Economic Development and Scientific Technology.

Ahn is a familiar screen persona through box office smashes like "May 18" (2007). He's also a winner of multiple film awards, including Best Actor for "Radio Star" (2007 Daejong Film Festival) and a special recognition for 50 Years of Acting (2006 Daejong ...

Director Lee Joon-ik of "The King and Clown" and "Radio Star" fame will make his debut as an artist.

Lee Joon-ik will be opening the Kuma Gallery on the 5th, a small gallery located opposite the Constitutional Court of Korea in Jongno-ku. In celebration of the gallery's opening, there will be a 5-artist exhibit entitled "Life is Suddenly" displaying works by Park Bul-ddong, Cho Hoon, Joo In-kyung, and Hwang Hyun-ho.

The Kuma gallery opening is a significant event for director Lee, as well as for his daughter Lee Da-yeon, who will be chief executive of the gallery.

"Kuma" is actually Lee Joon-ik's nickname. "It means 'bring down mountains to make plains' and it's an expression from a life motto of mine which is similar to the famous 'Just do it' motto", he explained, laughing.

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 28th in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

Ahn Seong-gi seems perennially calm and collected. A gentle smile on his face, he does not raise his voice even when he talks about the turbulent developments pummeling the Korean cinema in recent months. But his concerns are genuine because, in his view, the local film industry is in deep trouble and the future outlook remains gloomier than ever.

Ahn's perspective about the current state of Korean movies and filmmakers is hard to be discounted. The list of films in which he played a key role in the 1990s alone include "Two Cops" (1993), "The Taebaek Mountains" (1994), "Festival" (1996), "The Soul Guardians" (1998) and "Nowhere to Hide" (1999).

Veteran actor Ahn Seong-gi returns with another leading role in comedy-caper "My New Partner", opening March 6 across Korea. AHN is a face familiar to audiences of all ages, with a screen career that spans some 50 years. By the mid-80's he was Korea's most bankable lead, starring in many of the decade's top films.

In "My New Partner", AHN plays Min-ho, a veteran police detective who winds up teaming with his estranged son Yeong-joon (played by JO Han-seon), a cold-hearted cop fresh on the job. The pair have a chance to mend their damaged relationship as they try to crack a big drug case in Busan.

Actor AHN has appeared in over 100 films, winning numerous awards and working with top directors such as IM Kwon-taek, BAE Chang-ho, LEE Chang-ho, PARK Kwang-su and LEE Myeong-se. His most recent films include "May 18" (2007), "Radio Star" (2006), "Hanbando" (2006), "Duelist" (2005) and "Silmido" (2003).

For the first time after the breakout of the ridiculous rumour of homosexual relationship between the two actors, Jo Han-seon spoke out about the truth behind the rumour.

On 6th, Jo Han-seon appeared in the " Radio Star " of the MBC Chinese New Year's Special . Upon the host's comment about the homosexual rumour between him and his close friend, actor Kang Dong-won, he said, "It is so absurd. I have no idea how such rumour came about".

He said, "When the rumour of Kang Dong-won and I were going around, we both already had a girlfriend. He and I got to know each other when we were doing modelling before starting our acting careers. And we are still maintaining a good friendship".

The host, Kim Gook-jin commented that in his film with Kang Dong-won, the "Temptation of Wolves", Kang Dong-won stood out so much that it was more like "Temptation of Kang Dong-won".
