The first prejudice people have against actress Ko So-young is that she is a trend-surfer. The second is that she is a snob who will marry into the owner family of one of Korea's big conglomerates. She shrugs off the first, declaring herself "oblivious" to trends. But the other charge clearly rankles. "I just can't cope with that. I want a man who is ordinary and takes good care of his family, and who stays faithful to me his whole life", she says.

Back after a hiatus since her 2002 movie "Double Agent", Ko is promoting the new horror movie "Apartment" ("A.P.T".) due out on July 6. The Chosun Ilbo caught up with her at a café in Seoul's not un-trendy Cheongdam-dong this week. "I wanted to play in a genre movie", Ko explains. She plays Sejin, who tries to solve the mystery of serial killings incidents, in the movie based on a comic book by Kang Pool.

As the film industry is, and probably always will be, the musical industry has become a huge magnet for young wannabe entertainers. From K-pop stars such as Ok Koo-hyun ("Aida") and Kim Tae-woo ("Altar Boyz") to film and television actors like Kim Jeong-hwa ("Mitbadageseo"), increasing numbers of star entertainers are seeking to boast their versatility through the genre.

Thanks largely to their popularity, musical dramas starring them have always been successes. It, however, doesn't mean that everyone involved is happy, nor is it good for the industry in the long run.

"Musical dramas need their own specialized talent", Nam Kyeong-joo, 41, one of the biggest musical stars who has dedicated nearly all of his entire career to the genre, said in a recent interview with The Korea Herald. 'My Piano,' Neither Good Nor Bad

The new movie "My Piano" (Horowitz-rul Wihayo) has a plain and a rather predictable storyline _ a troublesome boy with a talent for the piano learns how to communicate with the world through music thanks to his teacher _ and it is delivered without big ups and downs.

But a series of small yet interesting episodes work as tasteful spices in the movie, saving it from becoming a total flop, and some classical music pieces played by skillful actors help it stay enjoyable.

Directed by Kwon Hyung-jin, the film revolves around Kim Ji-su (played by Uhm Jung-hwa), a 30-year-old single woman who used to dream about becoming a world-class pianist but ends up opening a small neighborhood piano school on the outskirts of Seoul.

Film producers stampede into musicals

The growing local musical industry is attracting major film production companies, which are deemed to be the highest profit makers in cultural industries.

CineLine-II, the production company of "Running Boy" ("Marathon") (2005) and "Friend" (2002) will stage "Fall in Love", a new musical of their own creation, at Yonkang Hall, downtown Seoul, from June 2 to Aug. 27. "With so many foreign-licensed musicals dominating major venues, the local musical market has become a league of its own", said Seok Myung-hong, president of the film production company in explaining the background of his decision to join the theatrical production.

When romance meets camera tricks

In the movie "When Romance Meets Destiny", Il-woong, an "experienced" buddy of the film's two main heroes, shyly admits that most men are looking for two kinds of women ― those they can love below their belly button and those they can love above it.
Indeed in this romantic comedy about the male psyche, Kim Hyun-seok divides the male gender into two categories ― those who seek romance with a sense of purity and those who seek it in lust.
The film concerns two brothers who are polar opposites. The first part tells the story of Gwang-sik (Kim Joo-hyeok), a studio photographer who is too shy and timid to confess his feelings to a woman he's had a crush on for nearly seven years.
The dictionary of romance for his younger brother, Gwang-tae (Bong Tae-gyu), on the other hand, begins with sex and ends with sex.
