KOFIC Announces Fellows for The 2007 Filmmakers Development Lab.

Officiating in Los Angeles at the opening of the first representative office of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) outside Korea, Chairperson Ms. An Cheong Sook today announced the line up of Fellows and Mentors for the second KOFIC Filmmakers Development Lab aimed at emerging filmmakers of Korean and Korean descent in the diaspora.

The Filmmakers Development Lab chooses five emerging filmmakers from submitted scripts. These Fellows are matched with individual Mentors drawn from the film industry in Korea and the United States. The Fellows and Mentors spend a week in Hawaii in one-on-one sessions developing their scripts. The Fellows and their projects are then presented to producers, financiers, production companies at the Independent Feature Film Market in New York in September, and at the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea, in October. Korean culture on screen at USFK festival

December 17, 2004 ㅡ Six Korean films with English subtitles will be screened at the USFK Korean Film Festival, starting today at three U.S. base locations: the Multipurpose Training Facility at Yongsan Garrison, Osan Air Force Base Movie Theater and Camp Humphreys Movie Theater.
The opening ceremony takes place at 5:20 p.m. at Yongsan, followed by a screening of "Taegukgi" (2004), directed by Kang Je-gyu. "Taegukgi" was chosen because organizers wanted to show the effect of the Korean War on Koreans and its meaning to them. (Screenings are 5:30 p.m. Friday at Yongsan, and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Camp Humphreys.)
"Save the Green Planet" ("Jigureul Jikyeora", 2002), was directed by Jeong Jun-hwan, named Best Director of a Foreign Film at the 25th Moscow International Film Festival. It's a heartwrenching and bizarre tale of a young man who believes aliens are trying to take over the planet. (Screenings: Friday, 3 p.m. at Yongsan and Saturday, 1 p.m. at Osan.)

Friday and Saturday
The third USFK Korean Film Festival will screen six local movies with English subtitles today and tomorrow for the members of the American armed forces stationed here. The movies will be screened for free at theaters within three of the U.S. military bases _ Yongsan, Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Force Base.

Organized by Seoul Selection, the event aims to introduce Korean culture to American soldiers and their families. The movies shown this year are war film "Taegukgi", horror comedy "Sisily 2km", science fiction film "Chigu-rul Chikyora (Save the Green Planet)", romantic drama "Ino Kongju (My Mother, the Mermaid)," nostalgic melodrama "Hyoja-dong Ibalsa (The President's Barber)" and sentimental melodrama "Kkotpinun Pomi Omyon (Springtime)". `Sisily' Isn't Silly or Scary

Give credit to the film "Sisily 2km" for trying to make something new out of something old. The movie, which opened Friday, takes two of the most popular and overused genres in Korean cinema over the past few years _ horror film and gangster comedy _ but rather than choosing one or the other, tries for a potentially new hybrid by combining the two.

Unfortunately, good ideas don't always make for good films. Instead of going the parody route like, say, the "Scary Movie" series, "Sisily" literally tries to find a midpoint between the two genres by halving the film, starting off as a gangster affair and ending it with ghosts. The result is an incomplete film that doesn't come off as either comic or horrific.

Dolls Frighten Moviegoers in Upcoming Film

Many horror movies are scheduled to screen at local theaters this summer, including one currently in production featuring dolls that is sure to terrify moviegoers.

Directed by Jung Yong-ki and starring Lim Eun-kyeong, the movie "Inhyongsa (Doll Master)" is a story about a series of murders that occur in a doll museum.

"This movie is different from other horror films", said Lim Eun-kyong, Wednesday at a news conference held at a gallery currently holding a doll exhibition. "Many life-like dolls are used to strike the audience with terror but the movie also adopts an unusual sense of sadness".

Surrounded by a collection of 100 ball-jointed dolls at Mokkumto Gallery in Taehangno, Seoul, Lim showed a doll specially designed to resemble her that is on display at the exhibition.
