'Koreanovelas' Fever is sweeping the Philippines

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the second in a series of essays by a select group of foreign scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

The names Johnny, Jenny and Andrew may not ring a bell for Koreans, but for Filipinos, they started the so-called Korean Wave in the Philippines. They were the "Filipinized" names of the main characters in the drama "Autumn in My Heart", better known as "Endless Love 1" when it was shown in the Philippines. It was the first-ever Korean drama to air in the country.

The 'Fans of the Korean Waves' says, "We love Korean dramas, because…"

A monthly magazine of the 'Korean Drama Script Writers Association' have printed an exclusive article on the perspectives of the Asian 'Korean Waves lovers' toward the Korean dramas.

Under the title, "The voice of the Asian fans toward the Korean dramas" the article includes a thorough analysis of the elements of attraction in the Korean dramas by the critiques of various Asian countries, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, China and Japan.

Reporter Jen Ku Yang from 'The Hong Kong Economics Newspaper' said, "For example, previously, many Hong Kongnese only thought of Korea as a violent and unsettled country with large-scaled street demonstrations and violent conflicts. But from the sitcom "No one can stop them", they now see Korea as a creative, stable and scientifically advanced modern society. Henney starts his career in Japan!

Daniel Henney, a.k.a. the romantic guy, starts his career in Japan beginning with his fan meeting.

Henney had his first fan meeting event held on 4th in 'Umeda Art Theater' of Osaka, Japan.

This is Henney's first official event held in Japan.

Henney became the latest addition to the Korean 'Hallyu Star' ever since the drama 'My Name is Kim Sam-Soon' was aired in Japan and 'Spring Waltz ' was introduced through NHK.

His popularity was predicted when he visited Tokyo International Forum Hall for a drama event called 'Yoon Seok Ho Drama Concert' in August when he was surrounded by his fans and reporters.

Henney gave his autograph to everyone who attended his fan meeting event and shook everyone's hand.

His most recent movie was 'My Father', based on true story of Aaron Bates who was adopted by an American Family when he was an infant, looking for his biological father in Korea....| More

DVDs of Bae, Seo Bestsellers in Japan

As Korean actor Bae Yong-joon's popularity continues unabated in Japan, heartthrob Seo Do-yeong is now helping fuel the Hallyu fever in the country.

In DVD sales released by Fuji TV Thursday, Bae's DVD topped overall weekly sales followed by a DVD released by Seo, the protagonist of the last of producer Yoon Seok-ho's season-themed drama series, "Spring Waltz".

Bae's DVD covered his appearance at the Hallyu expo on Jeju Island and interview excerpts. The top sales testify to his consistent popularity following his hit drama "Winter Sonata".

Seo's DVD, capturing his daily life, is climbing the sales chart since its release on July 25.
