8 Korean Films Invited to 49th "The Times London Film Festival"

Eight Korean films, including "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (directed by Park Chan-wook), have been invited to the 49th "The Times London Film Festival" (LFF) to be held in Britain from Oct. 20 to Nov. 4.

According to the list of films invited to this year's festival that was released on the LFF Secretariat's Web site ( http://www.lff.org.uk ) on Sept. 15, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" was invited to the LFF's "Film on the Square" division and five Korean films were invited to the "World Cinema" division.

The five films invited to the "World Cinema" division are "Blood Rain" (directed by Kim Dae-seung), "Tale of Cinema" (directed by Hong Sang-soo), "Spying Cam" (directed by Hwang Cheol-min), "This Charming Girl" (directed by Lee Yoon-ki), and "Five Gazes".

"Five Gazes", a film featuring human rights, was invited to the LFF's "World Cinema" division long before the other Korean films were invited to the festival.

People around the world enjoy Korean film festivals in September

With the growing popularity and increasing success of Korean cinema abroad, a number of Korean films will be screened in varied film festivals all round the world especially in September.

The Korean Film Council reported that Korean films are screened not only in international film festivals but Korean film festivals, which exclusively show Korean films, in several places. Some of the film festivals are organized by Koreans residing abroad who wish to share their culture.

One such event is New York Korean Film Festival ( http://www.koreanfilmfestival.org ). Now in its 5th year, New York Korean Film Festival presents 15 of the latest and most exciting titles in contemporaryKorean cinema, including 'The Big Swindle' and 'The President's Barber.' The festival runs from September 2 to September 6 at The Lighthouse Theatre (www.lighthouse.org) in Manhattan, and from September 7 to September 11 at BAM Rose Cinemas ( http://www.bam.org ) in Brooklyn.

Korean film festivals taking place all over the world

With the growing popularity and increasing success of Korean cinema abroad, a number of Korean film festivals will be held in big cities all round the world in September.

"The requests from abroad for information about Korean films and the rental of films have jumped", said EJ Tae, marketing support manager for the Korean Film Council. "Embassies, cinemas and film clubs have contacted us about holding Korean film festivals".

In such festivals, audiences now want to see works by not only veteran directors such as Im Kwon-taek and Shin Sang-ok but also new films by young directors, Tae said.

Some of the film festivals are organized by Koreans residing abroad who wish to share their culture.

One such event is the 5th New York Film Festival, running from Sept. 1 through 11. Created by Media Bank, an organization of ethnic Korean students in New York, the festival will show a total of 15 films, including "The Big Swindle" and "The President's Barber".

Korean film, 'Spying Cam' picked the NETPAC Award at Brisbane International Film Festival

The Pusan International Film Festival Organizing Committee announced that director Hwang Cheol-min's 'Spying Cam (Frakchi)' won the NETPAC Award at the 14th Brisbane International Film Festival in Australia, which came to a close on August 8.

NETPAC (the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) takes as one of its aims the promotion of

Asian cinema's role in the development of cultural diversity and integrity in the face of globalization. It involves filmmakers, critics, Festivals, programmers, distributors, exhibitors, and film educators. One of the ways of promoting Asian film is through the presentation of the NETPAC Award at film Festivals, and this year, the Brisbane International Film Festival in Australia hosted it.

Director Hwang Chul-min's "Spying Cam" Wins Award at Brisbane Film Festival

According to Kim Ji-suk, a programmer of the Pusan International Film Festival, on August 10, director Hwang Cheol-min's "Spying Cam" (2004) won the NETPAC Award at the 14th Brisbane International Film Festival in Australia, which came to a close on August 8.

"Spying Cam" is a story about a man working as an informant for an intelligence agency at a university during the 1980s and the intelligence agent keeping him under surveillance. The film unfolds in episodes, beginning with the two hiding in a motel on the outskirts of Seoul.

"Spying Cam" has won awards and acclaims at overseas film festivals, such as the FIPRESCI Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in addition to prizes at the Buenos Aires International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Barcelona Asian Film Festival.
