  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame] Bong Joon-ho's "Mother - 2009"

    2013/10/26,
In the Spotlight this Week: "Mother - 2009" by Bong Joon-ho The mother-image invokes particularly powerful emotions within us all; they are the protecting and nurturing figures that we imagine to be compassionately eternal and lovingly steadfast. In "Mother - 2009" that ideal is given a cruel existence, a scratched filmind born from the collision of untouchable family values and modern Korea's fumbling with justice and reliability. How would a widowed mother react if her only son (of 28 years) were accused of cold-blooded murder? An interesting enough thought experiment, but all-star director Bong Joon-ho challenges us further by thinking the son as mentally handicapped, another cruel test of faith for his mother-image. 'Unconditional love' seems an appropriate tool from which to start from here, it's the romantic weapon that tells us all that a mother's love is always forthcoming - like the rise and fall of the sun. "Mother - 2009" is the tragic story of that unconditional love gone awry, lost somewhere in the vast and unforgiving social space that Bong places between mother and son, between their love and shared madness,...More
  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Shiri"

    2013/10/19,
In the Spotlight this Week: "Shiri" (1999) by Kang Je-gyu Kang Je-gyu's "Shiri" was a landmark feature that stands as Korea's first real blockbuster. The film sold over 6.2 million admissions during its run in 1999, an astonishing feat that broke the shackles on big-budget Korean films and represents a critical moment in Korea's film history. Kang made his debut three years before "Shiri" with "The Gingko Bed" (1996), a fantasy romantic epic that was heralded for its special effects and was also one of country's most successful films at the time. Since "Shiri", Kang has chosen to remain in the filmic fog of war, directing both the acclaimed "Taegukgi" (2004 - 11.7 million admissions) as well as the less successful "My Way" (2011 – 2.1 million). Kang may have fallen from grace somewhat with his last film "My Way" (which failed to make a profit on its $24 million production costs; the film made only $16M) and with this year's fantastical flop "Mr. Go" (which he produced), however Kang's filmography still remains an impressive one that has helped challenge and re-define the conditions and profitable potential of the once illusive Korean blockbuster,...More
  • After ups and downs, cinema in golden age

    2013/10/14, Source,
Actor Ahn Seong-gi has been in the movie business so long, he can barely remember his first role. He was just 5 years old when director Kim Ki-young cast him to play an orphan in a couple of scenes in "Twilight Train" in 1957. "It was just a couple of scenes", Ahn said in a phone interview. "I don't remember much. But I did a good job, so he offered me another role. I guess there were not many child actors in those days, so soon I was a regular actor". Like the rest of the country, South Korea's movie industry was rebuilding after the devastation of the 1950-53 Korean War, which means Ahn's career has been nearly as long as the Korean film business. Today, Ahn has starred in more than 70 movies, many made by Korea's top directors, and now is one of the country's most visible ambassadors for cinema,...More
  • [HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.09.27 - 2013.09.29

    2013/09/30,
Ticket sales slowed considerably in the aftermath of Korea's Chuseok holiday celebrations, but that didn't stop Han Jae-rim's "The Face Reader" from advancing past 8 million admissions ($54M). Last week Han's popular period yarn claimed 2.2 million admissions (51.5%) over a whopping 1,239 screens, but the harvest deities have fled and reduced the blockbuster's momentum here to just 641,786 (36.5%) over 857. "The Face Reader" is also now Korea's 14th highest grossing film of all-time, having just recently passed Kim Han-min's "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" (7.4M) and Park Kwang-hyeon's "Welcome to Dongmakgol" (8M). Han's hit still has more than a million admissions to go if it wants to take on Bong Joon-ho's post-apocalyptic thrill ride "Snowpiercer" (9.3M), a feat that will make it the fifth film in two years to break into the Korea's increasingly unstable top ten,...More

Quick message
At first I thought it was an average north&south war movie. But when Jin-Tae has joined the North, it had became interesting and tearful :'( It is really sad to see the 38th parallel is still hot!!! and it seems like it's gonna be like this
