PiFan Shorts Jury and Industry Program Announced

The upcoming Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) (July 16 – 26) has announced the members of its Puchon Choice Shorts jury. Invited to the 13th edition are actor-director YANG Ik-joon, whose debut feature "Breathless" won the top Tiger award at Rotterdam this year, and LEE Hanna, the producer of "Secret Sunshine", a Cannes winner last year. The foreign jury member is Todd Brown, founder and editor of the popular film website, Twitch (http://www.twitchfilm.net).

The short films this year will include the animated short, "Dust Kid" by director JUNG Yu Mi. The short was screened in the prestigious Director's Fortnight program at Cannes last month. It will compete for an array of prizes totaling over $US 10,000 in the categories Best Short Film, Jury's Choice for Short Film, Citizen's Choice for Short Film, and the Best Korean Short Film.

Actor Kim Works to Enjoy His Calling

"Enjoy One's Calling" is the phrase written on actor Kim Kang-woo's cell phone. "Talented people cannot beat people who know how to enjoy life. I went through hard times when I first started acting. But one day, I realized I was doing something I wanted to do and earning money for it. The point is to take pleasure in what I do ― acting", Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times at a cafe in Samcheong-dong in Seoul, Monday.

Kim, 29, debuted through "The Coast Guard" (2002), directed by Kim Ki-duk, when he was a senior at Chung-Ang University. "The only role I could get without any acting experience was a soldier", said Kim.

He was then noticed when he played Mu-cheol in the MBC drama "Breathless - Drama" (2003) and starred in SBS's "Three Leafed Clover" (2005). Kim has been known as "Mr. Right" since then for the honest and diligent characters he played. "It's funny. I didn't know that I had that kind of sincere image in me", he said.

Korean Films at Shanghai Int. Film Festival

A record 11 Korean features will be shown in the official selection of this years 9th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) to take place June 17th to the 25th. Among them PARK Jin-pyo's 2005 film You Are My Sunshine will run in the official competition section for the Jin Jue Award. Another Korean film, Jo Chang-ho's The Peter Pan Formula has been selected as a candidate for the Asian New Talent Award.

Two Korean directors KWAK Gyeong-Taek ("Friend", "Typhoon") and BONG Joon-ho ("The Host", "Memories of Murder") have been invited to sit on the Jin Jue Award jury which will this year be presided over by French director Luc Besson. Other directors on the jury include Stanly Kwan and Gabriella Salvatores.

Cine-cafe invites director

Director Jeong Jae-eun of last summer's inline-skater movie The Aggressives, was present at an English-subtitled screening of her 2001 feature debut, Take Care of My Cat. She was there to answer questions from the curious crowd of expat wives who gather every second and fourth Wednesday of the month to watch Korean films. The event called 'Cine Cafe Mornings' provides subtitled screenings of Korean movies along with tea and coffee in a cozy and private theater at the Samsung Raemien Cultural Center in Anguk-dong.

Organized by the Europe Korea Foundation, the Cine Cafe was designed to help foreigners become more familiar with Korean culture through the medium of film. Past screenings have included such diverse films as Oasis, Untold Scandal, Memories of Murder, You are My Sunshine, and the British documentary on the North Korean Mass Games, A State of Mind. Each film is given a brief but helpful introduction by Cine Cafe host, Anne Ladouceur.

Korean Films Praised at the Berlin Film Festival

The Berlin International Film Festival wrapped February 18th with several prizes awarded to ethnic Koreans. Composer Peter KAM received the Silver Bear for Best Film Music for his score in the Hong Kong made Isabella.

Korean-American director KIM So-yong won the FIPRESCI prize for his feature debut "In Between Days", in the Forum section of the program. Shot in Toronto, the film offers a bleak look at a dislocated Korean teenager who moves west with her mother. In Between Days won a special jury prize for independent vision at Sundance earlier this year.

The NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) prize was awarded to Korean-Japanese director Yang Yong-hi for her documentary feature Dear Pyongyang, after also winning a special jury prize at Sundance last month.
