Staff Reporter The red carpet is ready to be unrolled for the opening tonight of the 14th Pusan (Busan) International Film Festival (PIFF). Haeundae Beach in the southern port city will sizzle with the longest ever lineup of 355 films from 70 countries and a VIP guest list featuring more than the usual number of high profile stars and cineastes from near and far. Fans are invited to take part in not only star-studded screenings and events but also concerts, exhibitions and other eye-catching sideline events. Star-Gazing The opening ceremony takes place at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Suyoung Bay Yacht Marina. The 1970s screen siren Jang Mi-hee and "The Chaser" star Kim Yoon-seok will host the event, while top South Korean actors plan to grace the red carpet. Two Korean stars have been named to host the opening ceremony of the 14th Pusan International Film Festival. Actress JANG Mi-hee, who made her debut in 1976 and actor KIM Yoon-seok, who rose to lead status with his role in 2007's The Chaser, will raise curtains for the star-studded ceremony on Oct. 8th at the Busan Yachting Center on Haeundae beach.
JANG was one of Korea's top stars throughout the 80s, starring in films such as BAE Chang-ho's "Hwang Jin-Yi" (1986) and "Deep Blue Night" (1985). She is currently enjoying a renaissance in her acting career though TV drama "Mom Has Grown Horns" ("Mom's Dead Upset") in which she plays the colorful and unique character "GOH Eun-a". KIM Yoon-seok is a charismatic actor known for his supporting roles in many Korean films including "The Happy Life" (2007), "Tazza: the High Rollers" ("The War of Flower" - 2006), "Like A Virgin" (2006), and "The Big Swindle" (2004). Staff Reporter The "Chuseok" weekend is just around the corner and both major and cable broadcasters have prepared various programs for friends and family to enjoy. Special Programs KBS is traveling back in history to explore the ancient boat that carried celadon porcelain a thousand years ago with their special program "Goryeo Celadon Porcelain; Temptation of Green Celadon". The program searches for the ancient route the famous porcelain traveled, along with the reason why it was so popular in China and Japan. "Goryeo" will air Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. on KBS. "A Lecture from Heaven" will feature violist Richard Yongjae O'Neill's trip to a small village in South Chungcheong Province. According to numbers published by Korean Film Council (KOFIC) about the first eight months of 2009, Korean cinemas earned an unprecedented KRW 153,800,000,000 (little over US$ 124 million) last month August.
As many as 21.4 million Koreans visited cinemas in August, 43.2% of the population. Due to the recent price hike of KRW 1,000; Korean cinemas accumulated KRW153,800,000,000 instead of KRW 136,700,000,000. "Haeundae" and "Take Off" were mainly responsible for the record breaking performance of cinemas in August. The two films account for 60.4% of the sold tickets, stated KOFIC. Thanks to "Haeundae" and "Take Off", Korean films held a market share of 67% in August. It is the first time in eighteen months that Korean films occupied more than 60% of the market.
