Synopsis
Based on the novel of the same name written by star author Gong Ji-young, “The Crucible” follows a group of children with disabilities who suffer physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their teachers.
Gong is one of a few star authors in Korea whose novels have sold more than a million copies. When her novel was published in June 2009, it became an instant hit not only because it was written by Gong but because it is based on a true story.
The film begins as Gang In-ho (Gong Yoo), who is working to earn money for his daughter’s surgery, is appointed to a school for hearing-impaired children in Gwangju. But what he discovers there is an ugly truth: the children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, In-ho teams up with human rights activist Seo Yu-jin (Jeong Yu-mi). But he and Yu-jin soon realize the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth.
Director Hwang Dong-hyeok, who previously directed the 2007 hit film “My Father,” has received rave reviews for turning a successful novel into a well-made motion picture.

  • The 3 Means of Success For Hot Stars

    2011/10/01, Source,
There was an article a few days ago in the korean Osen portal, on Kang Dong-won, Won Bin and Gong Yoo and 3 common elements between them which contributed to their success. Being someone who has quite positive feelings for all three of these beloved actors, I decided to write an article inspired by the one found in Osen. Well-timed transition from television to movies So the one obvious common strategy between these three is that they started with television. Dramas are a good way to gain popularity, raise the level of offers you get and generally get noticed. All three gentlemen started with them and gained recognition and mainly fame through them. But television is a good way to pigeonhole ones self,...More
  • The Crucible - Two Sides of The Netizen Coin

    2011/10/01, Source,
Promotional still from The Crucible An article has come out in The Korea Times and many other places since then, about the stir "The Crucible" has caused. Thousands of Korean netizens and bloggers, along with Daum have shown their support for the people who suffered through this case and also demanded for change. I was very happy to hear about this. Netizens are not my favorite people, as the main volume of them I usually hear about or experience are ruthless, violent and brainless, but it seems decent people are active online as well. I've been following this movie ever since I heard news of it and it's been my hope that it would succeed in raising awareness on such a big issue. And unfortunately, it's a global issue. Children are the future "us" and we owe us both a better world,...More

With the hit Korean movie "The Crucible" fueling public outrage against sexual abuse of the disabled, another film about sexual violence against the disabled in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, is drawing keen attention. The North Jeolla Province Coalition for the Prevention of Discrimination Against the Disabled said Thursday that in July 2007, the 55-year-old head of the House of Glory, a facility for the disabled, repeatedly raped people with mental disabilities and his wife embezzled government subsidies. A whistleblower in the facility made the scandal public,...More
