Synopsis
Based on the novel of the same name written by star author Gong Ji-young, “The Crucible” follows a group of children with disabilities who suffer physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their teachers.
Gong is one of a few star authors in Korea whose novels have sold more than a million copies. When her novel was published in June 2009, it became an instant hit not only because it was written by Gong but because it is based on a true story.
The film begins as Gang In-ho (Gong Yoo), who is working to earn money for his daughter’s surgery, is appointed to a school for hearing-impaired children in Gwangju. But what he discovers there is an ugly truth: the children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, In-ho teams up with human rights activist Seo Yu-jin (Jeong Yu-mi). But he and Yu-jin soon realize the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth.
Director Hwang Dong-hyeok, who previously directed the 2007 hit film “My Father,” has received rave reviews for turning a successful novel into a well-made motion picture.

  • [HanCinema's Actor Spotlight] Gong Yoo and "The Crucible" DVD Giveaway

    2015/04/18,
Acquiring and maintaining stardom contain different necessities than acquiring and maintaining a stable career and prestige as an artist. Stardom often depends on starring in successful works and being very prolific. Audiences get easily impressed by new things and move on quickly unless thoroughly engaged and hooked. This is especially true for the Korean drama industry. Gong Yoo is an odd case of someone whose acquired fame has kept him relative despite the sparsity of his works. He is also someone who is now branching out,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "Shoot Me in the Heart"

    2015/02/14,
Soo-myeong (played by Yeo Jin-goo) is a sad, disturbed young man who's being sent to a mental institution for his own protection. Seung-min (played by Lee Min-ki)...well, it's some time into "Shoot Me in the Heart" before it's made completely clear whether Seung-min is actually crazy. Seung-min claims to be the victim of some sort of elaborate conspiracy. A single phone call is all Seung-min needs to produce someone who can vouch for his sanity. Of course, that's just what a crazy person would say, and we can't listen to crazy people. It's not like a sane person would react violently if they were forcibly restrained in a mental institution,...More

Top actor Park Hae-il (above) plays news program producer Min-cheol, who battles to unveil the truth about faked stem cell research. Actors and director Yim Soon-rye, fourth from left, pose at a press event for the movie "Whistle Blower", held at Megabox in Jongno District, central Seoul, on Sept. 16. "This film is based on a true story, but please be informed that it is a work of fiction". In the past few years, this attention-grabbing introduction has acted as a guaranteed ticket to box office success, as shown in 2011's "The Crucible", based on the horrific abuse of handicapped students in Gwangju, followed by "The Attorney" (2013) and "Han Gong-ju" (2014), which earned immense support, leading to protest campaigns and even legislative reform,...More
