Korean films have been gaining global attention overseas for the past few years, winning notable prizes in world-class film festivals in Cannes, Venice and other cities. Make the best of your stay in Korea with the 1st KAFA Film Debut Program scheduled for this coming weekend.
From May 8 to 10, Mirospace, a movie theater in Jongno-gu, Seoul, will screen four recently released Korean independent feature films with English subtitles.
"The Room Nearby" by director Goh Tae-jeong depicts an encounter between a woman who needs her space and a woman who is afraid of such space.
"The Day After" by director Lee Suk-gyung is about a woman who encounters a fine day after a stormy divorce.
"The Story of Mr. Sorry" by director Kwak In-keun tells an interesting tale of a man whose career is wiping out other people's earwax. "Members of the Funeral" by director Baek Seung-bin depicts a family that has fallen apart.

Welcome back.
Producing a feature film costs a lot of money and time.
So most film students are limited to producing shorts.
But a film school here in Seoul is running their curriculum differently to prepare the students as much as possible for the real world of cinematic arts.
Yoo Dal is in the studio to tell us more.

The Korean Academy of Film Arts has an advanced program for feature films and animations.
And the students enrolled in this course are required to produce feature movies which are fit for the screen.
The purpose of this program is to train the students intensively so they can contribute to the development of the Korean film and animation industry.
Arirang was able to visit the school and see the students work on their projects.
I was also invited to take on being an actress but without any lines.

The 11th International Women's Film Festival in Seoul (IWFFIS) kicks offits second decade of femme power this month, bringing 105 films from 23 countries to the Artreon Theater in Sinchon, western Seoul. Under the banner "See the World through Women's Eyes" the event runs April 9 – 16.
Opening the fest is the multi-culturally tense feature Half-Life, which premiered at Sundance last year to rave reviews. The festival's only competition section, Asian Short Film Competition section will screen 18 shorts from around Asia. This year's jury includes Korean actress KONG Hyo-jin, director LEE Mi-yeon, director of the fest opener Jennifer Phang, and Japanese women's film festival chief Yukiko Hibino.

Action comedy "Chaw", directed by Sin Jeong-won, was sold to 10 countries.
Korean films made their mark at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival, which ended last Sunday.
Kim So-yong's "Treeless Mountain" won the Ecumenical Prize, while Lee Suk-gyung's "The Day After" took the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Award. Both are independent films.
Treeless Mountain portrays two young sisters growing up in the countryside. They have been abandoned by their mother, who does not have enough money to raise them. But their aunt, with whom they are sent to live, is an alcoholic.
The 89-minute film was first screened at the 13th Pusan International Film Festival last year, where it won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Award.
"Treeless Mountain" will be released in U.S. theaters in April.
The Day After tells the story of a divorcee's life as she meets her soul mate.

The film "Antique" by Min Gyoo-dong has been invited to this year's 59th Berlin International Film Festival.
Based on a bestselling manga of the same title, the film will be shown out of competition in a themed section named Culinary Cinema.
"My Dear Enemy" by Lee Yoon-ki, "Land of Scarecrows" by Noh Kyeong-tae, "Members of the Funeral" by Baek Seung-bin, "The Day After" by Lee Suk-gyung and "Treeless Mountain" by Kim So-yong have been invited to the festival's Forum section.
