| Korean Horror Moves to New Haunted Territory (Source) |

There is something afoot in Korean horror movies. From "Arang", to be released on June 28, via "Apartment" ("A.P.T".) out in July, to "To Sir With Love", "Cinderella" and "Untold Story - The Red Forest" all to be released in August, indigenous horror movies have evolved to a higher level. In an effort to wash away the cheap shocker taint, the budgets are growing and the casts are becoming stellar. This summer, even moviegoers with sophisticated tastes are bound to find one good enough for them.
Quality Horror
Horror films have long been a gateway to success for new directors due to their relatively low budgets. If a W2-3 billion (US$1=958) investment including marketing costs lured more than 1 million viewers, the movie was considered to have hit the jackpot. But the new slew of horror films are betting on quality. "To Sir, With Love" cost W4.2 billion, "Apartment" W4 billion, "Arang" W4 billion' and "Cinderella" W3.6 billion -- all pretty close to the average for Korean movies, ... |More

As the nation's only horror film series, "Yogo Kwedam", which literally translates into "High School Ghost Story", has brought a chill to the summer seasons for teens and adults alike.
The series began with "Whispering Corridors" in 1998, which sparked the rush of local teen horror films, and followed it up with two other commercially successful scream fests.
Equan Choe (Choi Ik-hwan) is the director for the fourth installment of the series, "Voice Letter" (Yogo Kwedam: Moksori), due out Friday. He admits the most difficult part was how to make his work different from previous movies without losing basic elements of the original.
"Of course, I found it really hard to make a film for the series as I had to be able to put my own characteristics and my own style within the limitations of the traditions of the original", Choe told The Korea Times on Monday. "So this film also revolves around students at a girl's high school in the genre of a horr... |More

Aren't high schools scary places? The constant pressure of exams, homework and competition with ones peers is enough to make one to scream.
The crew of an upcoming horror film "Voice Letter (Yogo Kwedam: Moksori)" is now working hard to make the place even more frightening.
"The movie maximizes the fear that is created from the absence of something usual", Equan Choe, director of "Voice Letter" told reporters Saturday at an indoor set compound in Puchon, Kyonggi Province. "It depicts a series of dreadful accidents after a teacher lost her voice".
The movie is the fourth installment in the "Yogo Kwedam" series. With "Whispering Corridors", in 1998, "Memento Mori (Yogo Kwedam Tubonjjae Iyagi)" in 1999 and "Wishing Stairs (Yowu Kyedan)" in 2003, the films all take place at a girl's high school.
"The most difficult thing is to make each one different. There are things I can't use since they were used in the previous films", said Choe, who wa... |More
