Crime Thriller

Synopsis
A serial killer targeting elementary school students is on the loose—and 5 victims means even the president gets involved in the investigation. When the most probable suspect dies in custody and the case looks like it’s reached a dead end, high ranking police brass decide to create a killer—and anyone will do. Though Detective CHOI Cheol-gi boasts an incredible number of arrests over his career his rank never showed it. He was framed and demoted for another crime and decides that this is his last chance at professional redemption. He makes a deal with mob boss JANG Seok-gu, who he has been investigating, and together they decide to set up one of the existing suspects as the serial killer. The only hurdle in their plan is public prosecutor JU Yang, who takes on the case. JU himself had been involved in a deal with the boss of a rival criminal organization, and President Kim wants CHOI dismissed from his position. When the secret deals and back alley agreements start to come to light, it only serves to drag CHOI, JU, JANG, and KIM deeper and deeper into a dark hole of questionable ethics and abuse of the law.

  • Ryoo casts for 'Veteran'

    2014/03/07, Source,
Yoo Ah-in and Hwang Jeong-min One of Korea's most popular action directors, Ryoo Seung-wan, has reportedly settled on most of the cast for his newest project, a crime-thriller titled "Veteran". Seasoned actor Hwang Jeong-min will reportedly play a detective in the film, and rising star Yoo Ah-in will be a young millionaire who comes into conflict with him, according to local reports yesterday,...More
  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Bedevilled": A Gorgeously Grotesque Revenge Rampage

    2014/02/15,
In the Spotlight this Week: Jang Cheol-soo's "Bedevilled"... Jang Cheol-soo has an incredible cine-clock ticking within, a marvellous metronome that I like to imagine he has swinging and tocking above his desk as he writes and plans his work. This constant ticking then harmonises with whatever creative genius takes hold of him as puts pen to paper. A film like Jang's debut film "Bedevilled" is the result of such a ritual; a gorgeously grotesque genre film that hypnotises and horrifies with the percussive precision of a mad watchmaker come autistic composer. The film ebbs and flows like a daring dream; one that's sweet and surreal, but whose intent is deranged and two-faced, mixing together melodrama, horror, and revenge into a compelling cinematic concoction that bubbles and boils over in the most spectacle fashion imaginable,...More
  • [HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2014.01.24 ~ 2014.01.26

    2014/01/27,
"Frozen" remains solid at the top but local flicks still dominated... The Oscar-nominated animation "Frozen" held its form at the top of the pile to secure its second weekend as number one. Despite the string of popular local features Walt Disney's winter wonderland was able to pack on another 1.2 million admissions (36.2%) to advance its total tally now to 3.1 million ($22.2M). However "Miss Granny", "Hot Young Bloods", "When A Man Loves A Woman" (aka "Man In Love"), and Yang Woo-seok's popular drama "The Attorney" all followed in close formation with respectable figures to collectively capture 59.3% of the ticket sales,...More
  • [HanCinema's Lists] The Top 5 Korean Thrillers of All-Time

    2014/01/17,
One of the most popular trends we saw in 2013 was the rampant release of action-packed thrillers! It's a genre that Korean cinema favours and continues to return to, but in 2013 the industry really did pump out a number of successful hits that contributed to the record-breaking tickets sales last year enjoyed. It's tricky to pinpoint films that are 'pure' thrillers because Korean films often blend and bend their genres in unique and creative ways. That being said, here is a quick look at the top 5 Korean thrillers that have stormed their way to box office glory,...More
