  • [HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Stoker" and the Bloodline Boiling Point

    2013/08/17,
In the Spotlight this Week: "Stoker" (2013) by Park Chan-wook... Earlier this year we saw Kim Jee-woon shoot Arnold in the desert in "The Last Stand", an outsourced mercy killing that was so self-reflexive it was virtually suicide. Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer" has only been out in Korea for a couple weeks now, but already it is in the black and has the international community drooling in anticipation. In the spotlight this week, however, is Park Chan-wook's "Stoker" – a sharply crafted psychological thriller that hates the smell of pastiche on its clothes, and prefers not to leave the house if at all possible. If these three English-language debuts were family, Park's creation would be a disturbing and twitchy introvert, the bad-blooded black sheep that keeps little secrets and sins silently. Made with less than a third of the budget its contemporaries enjoyed, "Stoker" is a modestly priced masterpiece that runs disturbingly deep,...More
  • [HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.07.26 ~ 2013.07.28

    2013/07/29,
Despite the release of DreamWorks Animation's "Turbo" and the latest comic book film "The Wolverine", it was "Red 2" that managed to remain Korea's film of choice. Director Dean Parisot's "Red 2" claimed 666,048 admissions (25.9%) in its second weekend out, holding off a host of challengers to round out the month of July in good condition. In addition to these two Hollywood features getting stuck in, this week will also see two mammoth Korean films go head-to-head for the summer crowds and crown. Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer" and Kim Byeong-woo's "The Terror Live" are both officially released on August 1st, with the latter having already scored a sneaky 122,762 (4.9%) admissions. "The Terror Live" stars the popular Korean actor Ha Jeong-woo ("The Berlin File", "Nameless Gangster", "The Client") as a T.V. anchor that has to get back into the game when a bomb-blasting terrorist threatens Korea's capital city,...More
  • Press gather to take in 'Snowpiercer' hype

    2013/07/23, Source,
Left to right, Movie director Bong Joon-ho, Actor Ko Ah-seong, Song Kang-ho. Prior to the release of the upcoming movie "Snowpiercer", cast members and director Bong Joon-ho gathered together for a press viewing of the movie on Monday in Wangsimni CGV in central Seoul. Actor Song Kang-ho of film "Memories of Murder" and actress Ko Ah-seong of 2012 movie "Duet" delivered their gratitude to be part of the movie, which has been garnering much international attention,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Talk] An Eye Towards "Snowpiercer"

    2013/07/13,
"Snowpiercer" hits Korean cinemas August 1st and will make Bong Joon-ho the third Korean director to be showcasing a Hollywood feature this year. The film has an interesting and exciting cluster of Korean talent and studios on board - all of which have worked together successfully in the past. Here though I wanted to draw the eye through some of that prestigious Korean talent and showcase the keen 'eye' behind "Snowpiercer". The film stars Song Kang-ho, one of Korea's most prestigious acting talents who has been a huge performer in Bong's impressive filmography; mostly notably in "Memories of Murder" (2003) and, the highest grossing Korean film of all time, "The Host" (2006). One of "Snowpiercer"'s producers has also made fairly good use of the 46-year-old actor. Park Chan-wook continues to cast Song in his films, most recently "Day Trip" (2012), but he's also starred in "JSA - Joint Security Area" [2000], "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002); "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005-cameo); and "Thirst" (2009),...More
