Korean star Lee Byeong-heon is returning to TV screen in a spy thriller titled "Iris". Lee's first TV drama in five years since his starring role in "All In", "Iris" is Korea's first attempt at a high-tech spy thriller filled with flashy action scenes, cool cutting-edge devices, and scenic overseas locations.

The 20 million-dollar action-packed drama is directed by Kang Je-gyu of "Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War" and Lee Hyeong-min of "Sorry, I Love You" and produced jointly by Taewon Entertainment, which had made the global project "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon".Filming will begin later this year and take place in Russia, Japan, China and the United States. The twenty-parter "Iris" is scheduled to be aired early next year.

"The Chaser" (Chugyeokja), a Korean thriller directed by Na Hong-jin, has turned out to be a surprising hit in the slump-laden local film industry in the first quarter. Released on Feb. 14, it is still showing strong performances at the box office, outsmarting other Korean and foreign competitors.

If the current trend continues, the ticket sales of the thriller is now expected to reach the 5-million landmark soon, possibly emerging as the most successful Korean film in the first half of 2008.

The trailblazing success of "The Chaser" at the box office reflects the dearth of successful Korean flicks. Even foreign films are not faring so well, with Hollywood blockbusters mysteriously absent in the box office slots.

The problem with the film lineup in April has been compounded by the current downturn hitting local productions and distributors hard.

The star-studded cast and crew of "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon" saw the world premiere of the Korean film project Monday at CGV Yongsan Theater in central Seoul. Superstars Maggie Q and Andy Lau and directors Daniel Lee and Sammo Hung sent a buzz through the city as reporters and fans gathered for the exclusive event before its release across Asia.

Korea and China bring an ambitious war epic inspired by "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". The 600-year-old epic novel by Luo Guangzhong is one of the most important literary pieces in China and is also a classic read in Korea.

The film marks many firsts and challenges for the makers. Korea's Taewon Entertainment, which handled sales and post-production scripting, calls it a "global" project that goes beyond being a Korea-China collaboration. It is aimed for wide release outside of Asia.

The Korean film industry is making rapid inroads into China. In the short term, it is a way to boost growth in the local film market. In the long term, it is part of a joint effort to branch out into the world market.
China's film market has been growing at 30 to 40 percent a year by revenue, and thus Korean filmmakers are anxious to find Chinese partners. In the last year there has been a big jump in the number of jointly produced films. Korean companies have also been opening multiplex theaters with Chinese partners.
The lives of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, warlords of ancient China, and heroic tales of many other gallant warriors are chronicled in the "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon", a classic Chinese literary masterpiece which is much loved in Korea and Japan, as well as China.

BUSAN, Oct. 15 (Yonhap) -- The ongoing Pusan film festival on Sunday inaugurated a business market dedicated to Asian works, giving it momentum to become a center for the regional cinema industry.

The Asian Film Market brought together some 2,000 movie industry personnel from around the world, including giant distributors Toho-Towa Co. and Shochiku Co. of Japan, organizers said.

"The Asian Film Market will be a complete marketplace for those interested in Asian movies, both artistic and commercial, and those who are really interested in signing deals with them", said Park Kwang-su, the market's director and a film director who made "A Single Spark -- Jeon Tae-il", an acclaimed real story of a laborer who gave his life to protest authoritarian suppression.
