'King & Clown' star talks about his rise to celebrity, and fall back to earth

There are certain things you might expect when meeting a star actor: crazy good looks, fabulous lifestyle and, perhaps, a bit of attitude.

Such was this reporter's expectation before an exclusive interview with Korean actor Lee Joon-ki on a recent afternoon. Lee, once a young and struggling actor from the port city of Busan, was catapulted to stardom with his impressive portrayal of an androgynous clown in the 2005 hit film "The King and the Clown".

Today, Lee is ranked as one of Korea's biggest box office draws. The few films he has made have attracted almost 20 million people, according to the latest figures.

This puts the 27-year-old actor on par with some of Korea's most successful veterans, like Song Kang-ho, Seol Kyeong-gu and Ahn Seong-gi.

Director Jeon Soo-il Talks About `Himalaya'

Director Jeon Soo-il can be grouped among "the Kim Ki-duk clan" of artists who are better appreciated in the international film festival circuit than in local theaters.

His latest film "Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells" is slated to compete in July _ when he turns 50 _ at the 44th Karlovivary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. This means that all six of Jeon's features will have been invited to major cinema events.

But as much as the film, now showing in theaters, marked the comeback of "Old Boy" star Choi Min-sik, its press preview attracted a mad crowd of reporters (Some 20 people had turned up for his previous multiple award-winning "With a Girl of Black Soil").

The aforementioned Kim is known to provoke onscreen, and Jeon also does not hesitate to depict shocking characters that take performance art to an extreme degree and commit suicide on stage ("I Have the Right to Destroy Myself").

Korean Film Festival Tours China

A Korean Film Festival will be held across China this month, bringing 12 Korean features to three major Chinese cities – Beijing (Nov. 14-19), Shanghai (Nov. 16-21) and Kunnming (Nov. 25-28).

The event, organized by the Korean Film Council, China's state film authorities, and the Shanghai International Film Festival, brings a mix of critically and commercially successful Korean hits to local Chinese audiences.

Opening the festival is director LEE Joon-ik's rock-redemption comedy "The Happy Life" (2007). LEE Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine", which has won numerous awards including Best Picture at the 2007 Asia-Pacific Screen Awards and Best Actress at Cannes (for JEON Do-yeon) will also screen.

Other films in the touring festival include JEONG Yoon-cheol's "A Man Who Was a Superman", JANG Yoon-hyeon's "Hwangjin-y - Movie - 2007", HEO Jin-ho's "Christmas in August" and IM Kwon-taek's "Beyond the Years".

Jeong Kyeong-ho to Attend Korea Film Festival in Shanghai

Actor Jeong Kyeong-ho will represent Korea at the Shanghai Korea Film Festival in China. Sponsored by the Chinese film authorities and the Korean Film Council, the first ever Shanghai Korea Film Festival will run from November 16 through 21.

Jeong is invited to the festival as a representative of Korea's next generation of actors. He is expected to demonstrate the diversity and excellence of Korean films and performers. His past works include hit TV dramas like "Sorry, I Love You" and "Time between Dog and Wolf - Drama". Jeong has just recently wrapped up the filming of "The Turtle Runs" with Kim Yoon-seok of "The Chaser" fame and is getting ready to star as Prince Hodong in an upcoming TV drama titled "Princess Ja Myung Go".
