Synopsis

Endless love towards all living, a roman drama “ The Land”

Since little, Seo-hee is always afraid of her father who would always cough and snare at her and she loved her mother only. When she’s 5 years old, she experiences a great shock when her mother runs off with one of their servants. She feels lonely, being left with her father who is only filled with revenge against her mother.

To such Seo-hee, Kil-sang is a big comfort to her like a big tree she can always lean on. One day, her father gets killed and taken advantage of her being young and little, her relative Cho Jun-gu takes all of the land certificates from her. She is kicked out to stay in the annex where she decides to revenge. Cho Jun-gu tries to have Seo-hee marry Cho Byun-su, who is disabled, so he can keep her as legal hostage.

To escape from her greatest risk of her life, with the help of Kil-sang, Seo-hee manages to escape from her hometown, and later gathers fortune and reputation as a merchant. For the purpose of taking revenge on Cho Jun-gu, she maintains intimate relationship with the Japanese. She marries Kil-sang. She surprises everyone by marrying a man of low standing, although they have two children and seem to settle down…

Park Kyung-ni's novels are considered to be classics, and the fact that her works are revived time after time onscreen is one proof of this. Screen adaptations for both movies and TV soap operas show the enduring quality of her work.

Park's most celebrated novel "Toji, the Land" was adapted onscreen numerous times. It is often considered a timeless historical novel, and even a cartoon version was published last year. Told in five parts over 16 volumes, it portrays the social climate of the early 20th century. But tracing the lives, loves and sorrow of peasants and nobilities, "Land" features universal themes that still appeal to people today.

The story appeared as a movie in 1974, starring veteran actor Lee Soon-jae. It inspired three television soaps in 1979, 1986 and 2004 respectively. The latest version was particularly significant as it followed the publication of the fifth and final episode of the epic work in 1994.
