  • Erotica in Korea – Racy folk paintings from the Joseon Dynasty

    2013/02/23, Source,
"Seodang" by Kim Hong-do. Circa 1780. Photo courtesy of National Museum of Korea. Written by on February 19, 2013 in Arts Strict and proper. Stern and austere. It is the general image we have of the Joseon Dynasty, when Confucianism was the ruling philosophy and doctrine. But really, think about it. That can't be all, can it? There is always bound to be the other side, a frivolous, not-so-serious, let-us-have-some-fun side, even if it is that era of dignity and virtue, Joseon. "Official" documents and manuscripts would have us believe otherwise, but Joseon wasn't that uptight. When it came to matters of a more personal sort, like sex, it just wasn't mentioned nor recorded much. Not blatantly. But that doesn't mean it wasn't there. 18th century Joseon was the Korean renaissance. Culture bloomed under the reign of King Youngjo and Jeongjo, and the progress in Korean art was particularly noticeable. In addition to traditional ink paintings of still life and landscapes, folk paintings depicting the everyday life of Koreans emerged as a new genre. Although few in comparison with their counterparts, these folk paintings provide a good and rare look into what life was like back then,...More

  • City transplants are changing the face of Jeju

    2012/12/01, Source,
Huh Joon-young, 37, used to work at a large public relations company in Seoul, when she spent nearly all of her life until ...ing to Jeju early this year. She purchased an old house by the beach in Seogwipo for 100 million won ($92,200) and remodeled it, which cost her an additional 80 million won, to start a guesthouse business. To come up with the money, she took out a bank loan and used all of her savings. "My husband was opposed to the idea [of ...ing to Jeju] at first, but I persuaded him to think of this as an early preparation for our life after retirement", Huh says. Her husband, who still works in Seoul, comes to Jeju on weekends, a routine that will continue until he finds a job on the Korea's southernmost island. "I was working at a public relations company, and there was no distinction in my life Between weekdays or weekends not to mention Between day and night", she says. "I just felt like I was being drained of life by the intense rat race in Seoul. I was greedy, working to have more than I needed. And if that didn't work out, I felt deprived. I was just sick and tired of comparing and competing,...More

...ING: Too many would have beens by Rogue

F
rom the onset, the viewers are given a taste of how close the mother and daughter are, and this is an important foundation of the movie because of a twist towards the end.

Lim SooJeong plays Kang MinAh, a reclusive young lady who knows she's sick but doesn't know EXACTLY how sick because that fact is hidden by her mom, whose only wish is to have MinAh's remaining years lived in happiness. Enter Lee YoungJae, played by Kim RaeWon, a photography student. He befriends MinAh, who is reluctant at first but gives in when YoungJae proves to be relentless in his pursuit of friendship.

And the story progresses with YoungJae and MinAh dating. I didn't see any solid scenes where I can conclude that the two are falling in love, except maybe that hospital scene when YoungJae placed a ring on MinAh's deformed hand - and that signalled YoungJae being IN love already. And even that was weak because there weren't previous scenes to back it up. Sure, MinAh was probably attracted to youngJae, her lines say as much; and YoungJae was being extraordinarily sweet and nice, but by the time MinAh succumbs to her illness, you're left hanging.

Now on to that twist. The twist kind of muddles the plot abit, and I found myself replaying scenes in my head as to when the mom and YoungJae could have possibly met. I was left to speculate. And I also found myself justifying to myself that maybe the reason why the scenes between Youngjae and MinAh aren't that solid to establish a romantic set-up is because there would be a twist in the end. I got more confused rather than being enlightened though.

I think it would have been better if they showed YoungJae meeting the mom earlier in the movie. The twist would no longer be a surprise as discerning viewers would arelady know what will happen but what the heck, it would have been a million times better and more poignant. Think 10 Things I Hate About you and ...ING's plot would have been illuminating.
