Mini dresses seem to be everywhere this season. Actress Ko So-young appeared in a stylish mini dress for the launch of her latest movie "Project Makeover" ("Go Go Sister"). So did the actress Kim Hye-soo at an event in January. In the same month actress Kim Ah-joong showed up in a mini dress at the "2006 Korean Model Awards".
No one likes to look boring. Celebrities, in particular, want their own distinctive style. So when several popular actresses show up in similar dresses it proves that mini dresses are this season's fashion sensation.
Some may worry that the dress does not go well with a less-than-perfect figure. Some may worry that they are too old for short mini dresses.
Lee Myeong-hye, a stylist at a fashion company, worries about exactly these problems. "Everyone seems to be wearing one these days. I would really like to try it myself, but I don't think I'm thin enough. Besides it would be too eye catching to wear at work", she says.
Ms. Lee is not the only one with such concerns. "People seem to take dresses too seriously", says Choi Hye-ryeon, a fashion stylist. You don't need to be attending a party or a fancy event to be wearing a mini. Feel free to indulge yourself. With a little personal touch, you can create your own style suitable for all occasions".
Ms. Choi offers fashion tips according to one's age range.
Some may be confused over the term mini dress. Is it a mini skirt, or a dress? A mini dress is a one-piece garment while a mini skirt is worn as a set with a sweater or a shirt.
One-piece mini dresses are suitable for both daily life and big parties. They vary in size and shape. Dresses can be traced back to the ancient Egyptian period. In fact, modern tunics originated during that time, and they can be seen on ancient statues. Whereas tunic dresses usually come down to one's ankles, a mini dress is much shorter.
So how did mini dresses suddenly come back into fashion? "It has a lot to do with the current influence of minimalism. With a simple style, mini dresses maximize femininity and beauty", explains Kim Soo-hyang, chief designer at Mogg. "A-line mini dresses will be especially popular this season".
A-line skirts and dresses have had periods of wild popularity ever since the style was introduced by the French designer Andre Courreges in the '60s.
