Lie was the first project taken on by one of the best creative teams in Korean television, director Pyo Min Soo and writer Noh Hee Kyung who would go on to produce high-quality dramas like Solitude, Foolish Love, and Sad Temptation. First broadcast in 1998, Lie stars then up-and-coming actor Lee Sung Jae (Daisy, Public Enemy) as a man on the brink of committing adultery. Incidentally, Lie would be Lee’s last appearance in television dramas before heading full-speed into his film career.

Once considered too provocative for national television, the theme of adultery has thrived in recent years with dramas like My Man's Woman, A Second Proposal, Here Comes Ajumma, and A Happy Woman generating high ratings across the board. Touching on this very subject, Lie tells the story of professional designer Joon Hee (Lee Sung Jae) who enjoys a fulfilling life with his wife Eun Soo (Yoo Ho Jung, The Woman Living Across the Street , Rude Women). But this once happily married man faces the biggest challenge of his life when the couple discovers that Eun Soo is unable to have a baby of her own. In the middle of the conflict, Joon Hee falls madly in love with his boss Song Woo (Bae Jong Ok, My Man's Woman, Goodbye Solo), putting his marriage in jeopardy.

성우(배종옥)는 성공한 인테리어 토털매니저. 겉보기엔 강하고 카리스마도 있지만, 한없이 부드럽고, 내면엔 사랑에 대한 깊은 회의로 인한 생채기를 안고 있다. 그가 부하직원이자 결혼 3년째인 준희(이성재)와 사랑에 빠지면서 거짓말같은 진실은 시작된다. 처음엔 지나가겠지 여겼던 이 사랑은 지나가지 않고 그 불길에 휩싸인 세 사람을 존재의 용광로 속으로 밀어 넣는다. 손이 불편한 탓에 판화 작가에서 인테리어 디자이너로 직업을 바꾼 준희는 한 살 어린 은수(유호정)와 소꿉장난처럼 아기자기한 결혼생활을 하고 있었지만, 성우에게 빠져드는 자신을 억제할 수 없다. 둘 사이에서 아픔을 안으로 삭히는 은수는 갤러리를 직접 운영하는 공예가. 남편 준희를 너무도 사랑하지만, 아이를 낳을 수 없는 몸이다. 그 곁에 은수의 옛 애인 동진(김상중)이 있다. 성불구라 아프게 은수를 떠난 그는 은수가 결혼한 뒤에도 친구처럼 지낸다. 거리에서 만난 세미(추상미), 장어(김태우)를 자의반 타의반으로 보살피다 그는 새로운 인간의 정을 맛본다.

직설적이면서도 사람들의 심리를 절묘하게 포착해낸 대사는 이 드라마를 드라마가 아니라 영화나 연극을 보고 있는 기분이 들게 만들었다. 작가의 서른 세 살 나이가 믿기지 않을 정도로 삶의 성찰이 묻어나는 대목이 있는가 하면, 결혼 안한 처녀가 어떻게 썼나 싶게 젊은 부부의 일상을 짚어낸 아기자기한 면도 보인다. 특히 "(은수) 잘한거야. 너무너무 잘한거야. 은수야, 울지마. 울지마." 식으로, 은수나 성우 모두 자기이름을 스스로 부르며 감정을 객관화해 자제하려는 노력이 돋보인다. 시청자가 드라마에 몰입되기 보단 한발짝 떨어져 모든 것을 판단하도록 하는 장치를 감춰둔 것이다.
