▣ Chipuro (The Way Home) (2002)
Saturday at noon
Seoul Selection Bookstore
Sang-woo (Yu Seung-ho) is an obnoxious city kid who is forced to stay with his mute grandmother (Kim Eul-boon) who lives alone in the isolated mountains of North Chungchong Province. He is a child of the modern age, raised on video games, robots, RollerBlades, Choco-Pies, KFC chicken and pizza. His grandmother is in every way his opposite, a poor villager living a meager solitary existence in a small, worn-down cottage. At first, though Sang-woo mercilessly takes out his frustrations on his silent grandmother, living up to his image as an urban brat, he slowly begins to appreciate the little things she does for him, her silent but unquestionable ways of showing affection, and by the end, learns to open up to her with love. Using ample amounts of craft and sentiment, director Lee Jung-hyang, who dedicates the film to "all the grandmothers in the world", has come up with a formula for a unique feel-good movie. Tickets: 3,000 won. On DVD. Located near Anguk Station on subway line 3. Details: (02) 734-9539 or www.seoulselection.com.
