Lovers' Concerto (DVD) (DTS) (US Version) DVD Region 1
YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Lee Han, Lover's Concerto was Cha Tae Hyun's first film after the blockbuster success of My Sassy Girl. Released in 2002, this quiet and moving drama sees Cha in a confused romantic triangle with Son Ye Jin (The Classic, Summer Scent) and the late Lee Eun Joo (Taegukgi, Phoenix).
Twenty-year-old student Ji Hwan (Cha Tae Hyun) treasures nothing more than his camera and taking pictures. One day Soo In (Son Ye Jin) and Kyung Hee (Lee Eun Joo) appear in front of his camera lens. Even though their characters are totally different, they understand how to complement each other. Ji Hwan falls for Soo In at first sight, but meets her kind rejection. Yet, it doesn't affect their relationship at all because they are both still young. As the years go by, the threesome establish a close and sincere relationship which is suddenly heading for a few minor changes...
This edition comes with 40 minutes of English-subtitled special features.

"Lovers' Concerto" is a formulaic melodrama that rises above its genre because of the sparkling performances of its great young cast. Cha Tae-Hyun, fresh off the success of "My Sassy Girl", stars as Ji-Hwan, who falls in love with Soo-In (Son Ye-Jin) the moment that she and her adorable friend Kyung-Hee (the late Lee Eun-Joo) walk into the restaurant in which he works. As the relationship between the three grows, affection between Ji-Hwan and Kyung-Hee also begins to grow. How the characters lovingly handle this potentially destructive situation helps to set this film apart; it shuns the obvious exploitative choices and feeds off the good nature of its thoughtfully drawn and acted characters. The film offers powerful lessons in true love and friendship. The film's melodramatic story is inherently manipulative and the film's "flashback" approach to storytelling is a confusing mistake, but I was more than happy to play along to spend more time in the company of these bright young stars. Moon Geun Young also shines in a small role as Ji-Hwan's little sister. I recommend "Lovers' Concerto" for a general audience. |

Kyung-hee (Lee Eun-joo) and Soo-in (Son Ye-jin) are the best of friends. Their personalities are located at the opposite sides of the spectrum - Kyung-hee, the one with a cheery disposition; Soo-in, the reserved and quiet girl. Then they meet Ji-hwan (Cha Tae-hyeon). Ji-hwan falls for Soo-in the instant he sees her. His declaration of his feelings makes the latter uncomfortable, so Ji-hwan 'turns back time' and instead offers friendship. The three then become good friends. The deepening of their relationship creates a tension in their friendship and Ji-hwan awakes one day to find the two girls gone... It's Korean melodrama at its best, and it's friendship at its deepest. This movie is perfect in every sense of the word. The innovative plot and startling twist had me blown away. There were numerous flashbacks utilized in this movie and they were skillfully presented. There was no confusion at all and the mood was built up just right for me to be astonished by the twist. Timing is crucial with this kind of turnabout in the story and the people behind the movie did everything superbly. The effortless manner in which the actors portrayed their characters gives truth to the saying that there is beauty in simplicity. Since I'm on the subject of Cha Tae-hyeon, I commend him for being magnificent in this movie. He did to this drama what he's done to comedy in the movie My Sassy Girl. Praises, too, to the leading ladies for not being overshadowed by Tae-hyeon's brilliance and rising up to his performance. It's a sad movie, alright, but it's definitely beautiful. 10 kimchi dishes out of 10. |

A Masterpeice of Loss and Love
|
At present I am watching the drama "Phoenix" and with the stories agonizing theme of exiled love (and watching Eun Ju's absolutely melancholic portrayal in this can tear you apart) all caused me to reflect again about Eun Ju's portrayal in "Lover's Concerto". A compete favorite of mine and such a beautifully captivating and emotional film I have had privilege to see. Eun Ju's final scene where she takes photographs of Ji Hwan and the children for me are the most breath taking of her. The music is so incredibly moving, too, with an heart felt and emotive score. Cha Tae-hyun, Lee Eun Ju, Son Yeh Jin and Moon Geung Young give such a luminescent portrayal of natural and mutual love between young people that can, if watched conscientiously, show a transcended nature of what we consider to be a 'loving relationship'. Are we all destined for one to one relationships or biblically speaking, completely sharing all together 'somewhere' a more angelic love that transcends singular love towards a higher plane? These three characters here seem to suggest the latter - if watched carefully through all the emotional noise (and "Phoenix" has a hell of a lot of emotional noise!!!) The pastoral feel of LC I find the most captivating, when the three friends are together in the fields or beside the beach, observing each others intricate natures. Like when Ji Hwan and Soo In observe Kyung Hee's childlike beauty as Ji Hwan says, with his camera eye observation, that he could almost literally pick her up and place her in his pocket. Its like watching characters who seem to be in some ethereal spiritual bond ship together. Kyung Hee and Soo In show a passive sisterly love that typifies their mutual commitment to each other in the hospital and when Ji Hwan joins them (after being initially rebuked by Soo In for a date) then begins to partake, gradually, their hallowed union. A type of friendship that can be so easily taken for granted in our time. It is also funny ridiculous, too, like when Ji Hwan is caught peeing in a field full of hidden (at the first instance) crop harvesters and, also, his loud bequest at the cafe window that no matter how he may get rejected by Soo In, his determination to hold on to these two girls as friends seems to him as being the better option. He doesn't bang his head to bits about no intimate relationship happening, or sulks into oblivion, but opts right away, for mere friendship - joining the girls for companionship that eventually leads him into a mutual understanding of supportive love. There is pain along the way and the film becomes a more subdued and soft, bitter sweet film about bond ships, ever changing relationships and this young photographer's search for love. For me "Love's Concerto" was also the first time I had ever seen Eun Ju and also reading about her own sad early death in 2005. When I discovered that Eun Ju also played the main theme piano piece, the combination of this situation, music and the film's theme, awed and quite saddened me. In fact on the second viewing, I confess I cried. That little piece of music delivers such emotional power when you realize she is playing it! A fact that she started as a pianist more so than an actress to begin with. All this makes the film, for me, so very poignant. Overall, a sad, sweetly funny and very beautiful film. It almost seems like a holy love relationship between the characters here, along with the tragedy portrayed in the film. The beautiful nature of this story can lend it to being, because of the tragedy, more a tale of sorrow than love, but that could depend on how we all view the eternal to the transient lives we all have. Still, if you haven't seen this film yet, I strongly recommend it. Like Eun Ju Lee, who I hope is never ever, ever, ever going to be forgotten, likewise the same about this film.....as surely after watching this it could be certainly very difficult to forget a film with such timeless emotional beauty. |
