YesAsia Editorial Description
Creepy, kooky, and full of gallows humor, black comedy Moodori is the inventive debut feature from director Lee Hyeong Seon, who previously worked in television. Starring veterans Park In Hwan, Choi Joo Bong, and Seo Hee Seung and actress Seo Yeong Hee (To Sir With Love), this minor gem reminds of the offbeat humor of Mapado, but served by three feisty grandfathers this time around. Full of morbid twists, strange surprises, and comic tragedy, Moodori is a low-budget offering with unexpected mileage.
The sleepy little town of Moodori has become the path of no return for many visitors, oddly appropriate since its name means "pathless town". It all started when the webmaster of a suicide website picked Moodori's mountaintop as his ideal location to leap to death. With his final destination popularized on the web, Moodori soon becomes the hot spot for suicide. Town residents Bong Gi (Park In Hwan), Hae Gu (Choi Joo Bong), and Bang Yun (Seo Hee Seung) decide to capitalize on Moodori's newfound notoriety by opening a guesthouse for these short-term visitors.

When Yang Mi-kyung (Seo Yeong-hee) fails to impress TV producer Baek with the discovery of a martial artist who professes he can levitate (to which he ultimately disappoints), she's belittled and told to go kill herself. Taking it to heart, Yang, who has been struggling as a reporter for quite some time, wonders if that might not be such a bad idea after all. That evening she enters an internet bar and happens upon a suicide-website, which has also amassed quite a loyal following, run by a man who eventually killed himself. The site leads her to a village called Moodori, situated in Kangwon province, high in the eastern mountains of Korea. The village is rarely visited by outsiders, and only local sheriff Chang-soo (Ryu Seung-mok) delivers a regular supply of food and goods, not to mention airmail, to three elderly men: Hae-gu (Choi Joo-bong), Bong-gi (Park In-hwan), and Bang-yun (Seo Hee-seung). One day a young man visits the town and asks for a place to stay. The next day the three men find his shoes at the top of a cliff and realise that he's jumped to his death. When the man's family arrive to claim the body, one of his relatives offers a substantial amount of cash to make up for such a burden. Soon enough another visitor turns up, and soon enough he ends up dead as well, resulting in yet another shower of gifts. Hae-gu, Bong-gi and Bang-yun decide that there might actually be something to this suicide malarkey, and seek to turn their new suicide hot-spot into a profitable enterprise. As the three old chaps enjoy their new found wealth, Yang eventually turns up at the village, but when she realises that she just might have a top story for producer Baek, entailing tens of people coming to "the haunted town" and topping themselves, all thoughts of suicide quickly leave her head. But her good fortune is soon turned upside-down, when a group of suicidal online friends show up and mistake her for one of their own. Lee Hyeong-seon's low budget debut feature, despite having crept silently from cinemas and onto DVD, is a fairly brisk and enjoyable flick examining, if anything, the exploitative desire of humanity brought on at the expense of a lost life. But although we have three elderly men, seemingly without any scruples, trying to make a rather questionable living as visitors readily plummet toward the foot of a mountain, atop which their little village sits, Moodori is everything but pessimistic. The notion of suicide might easily have negatively affected the production, and yet it's handled in a manner that sees the idea not so much being mocked or satirised, but existing simply to allow our main characters to reach some kind of catharsis. It's a welcome step from Lee Hyeong-seon in that films depicting suicide as a central theme often remain rather ambiguous affairs, due to the subject being nigh on impossible to truly fathom from an individual standpoint. The film's obvious strength is that it does in fact use the repercussions of suicide to drive home a simple message: that everyone should at least try to enjoy life for whatever it's worth. That's certainly a sweet enough sentiment. As a comedy, however, Moodori does have a job to do and it does so without causing any offence. It's no surprise to see a little toilet humour thrown in, which the Koreans seem to regularly lap up, no matter how repetitive it may become, in addition to a slightly cynical stab toward television production (the director having started his career in such a field), but on the whole Moodori derives all its fun from a cast of more than capable film veterans, a welcoming runtime and an absolutely terrific score. While the story seems to revolve around Seo Yeong-hee's character Yang and her attempts to become an ace reporter, Moodori is effortlessly carried by the highly entertaining threesome of Park In-hwan, Choi Joo-bong, and Seo Hee-seung. This is as much their characters' tale and how each of the ex-Vietnam soldiers get by day to day in a village that otherwise rarely receives visitors. When Yang arrives, Yeong-hee soon injects a full dosage of zest, which then results in a consistently amusing story, whereby these elderly folk are taken back to their teen years. There's a great repertoire shared between all parties, which turns quite the unusual cast into a highly expressive force. As the film draws toward its climax, the emotions of some of the players gradually becomes unstable, but they're admirably handled, even when sentiments inevitably reach a high point. There are some weak elements in relation to characters, however: Bang-yun's son Yong-soo has little need to be in the tale, neither does his crazy old mother. There's no proper look into Bang-yun's family life, whereas Bong-gi ultimately enjoys (enjoy being loosely applied) a far more awakening experience in the form of an unexpected twist, which may make or break the film for many. But perhaps the point is less on the overall family unit and more on simply appreciating the value of a life, when it seems that in such a cynical world a stranger can be looked upon as being a worthless entity. Although there's very little else to elaborate upon I should at least point out that Moodori also happens to be quite a beautiful looking picture. Cinematographer Choi Soon-gi does wonders with such an apparent low budget. The film is intimately set in a mountainous region, largely restricted to the village itself, which is often surreptitiously lit. But when the action is forwarded to its outer boundaries, Moodori becomes an even livelier affair, with some breathtaking scenery that offers a slice of life rarely seen by city-dwellers. DVDAnother "limited edition" that certainly doesn't feel particularly special, Moodori is presented by CJ Entertainment on R3 DVD. Audio/Visual Our only audio option is Korean 5.1 surround, and again its wholly underwhelming. I've never known a film with a 5.1 mix make so little of its surrounds. Moodori is largely a talkative film and on that front dialogue is excellently reproduced across the front channels, always coming across crisp and clear, with no drop outs or other such deterrent factors. The score, which is lovely and upbeat all round sounds good, but it's given little surround attention. In fact on the whole the rear channels are quite lazily mixed, with even ambient effects such as blowing winds really struggling to envelop the viewer. The film sounds good, but one wonders why they bother with 5.1 remixes in favour of simple 2.0 sometimes. Optional English subtitles are included and they're perfectly acceptable, despite more than a few grammatical errors. Extras Overall by Kevin Gilvear - DVD Times |

| "Moodori" is a richly enjoyable, wildly funny and ultimately poignant movie about the aged residents of an obscure mountain town who seek to cash in on a group of people who have chosen it as the place to come to end their lives. Seo Hee Seung is featured as Bang Yun, an inept young reporter who wants to advance her career by getting the inside scoop on this growing suicide trend. However, her undercover efforts go awry when the suicide pact crowd ropes her in to their deadly endeavor. Will the whacky oldsters succeed in turning others' deaths into a profitable venture? Will poor Bang Yun's nose for news cost her her life? Apart from some unfortunate bathroom humor, this terrific film hits all the right notes. Highly recommended. |

You sorry, if go to Moodori

Okay, right, so this film is about..well, like the theaters code of conduct with the word "Macbeth" (don't read this in a theater if you are an actor) to utter it may bring bad luck, I wont enunciate the key word that this film pivots on here, but mention what this great film is like. To cut to the chase, this is one entertaining film which I enjoyed very minute of. Its a gem, and you won't regret buying this! T-r-u-s-t- M-e! A mild black comedy of quirky humor and tragic sadness that moves along at a brisk and fun pace, its all a very lively movie. You can't take it all too seriously, either. Story Bits? Well...a female reporter in Seoul who after being conned over a news story by a farcical levitating mystic then gets booted out of her job (her boss is an irritating realist, ya see) and is then told (by her irritating boss) as she pleads with him to keep her job, to, ahem, consider her mortality. After drowning all her sorrows at a local video on-line gaming baang (getting 'drunk' on over pondering Linage 2 or Starcraft, maybe) finds on one of the computer terminals a web site advertisement for the Moodori village and of its 'main attraction' to get-on-down! For a reporter this 'getting on down' could be a good story! Moving on to this Moodori in Kangwoon Province we then find a group of three old locals constantly accommodating city dwellers visiting their humble village to appreciate the air, climate and, for some reason, a large mountain side with a lovely wide screen panoramic view point to consider their futures by - often leaving their shoes behind as a memento of their visit. I won't say what the city dwellers actually do (that word - bad karma) but will mention that these influx of sight seers would certainly want to avoid the local Korean Parachute Group or the Oversized Trampoline Circus act at the bottom of said mountain, as that would surely spoil their top agenda visiting Moodori experience. So, with the Seoul reporter visiting Moodori (for her to bag a good news story and get over the dodgy floating mystic and for her to kiss..ugggh..and make up with her annoying boss..who always seems to be on the toilet) and of the three excellent elder ex-Vietnam Moodori locals (believe me these are young at heart - they could even hip hop, I'm sure!), you get a rural based comedy that deals with a sensitive subject matter (mum's the word) that is delivered here with style, wit and consideration. Interestingly, I found Yeong Hee Seo (who plays the reporter) a wee bit like "My Girl" actress Da Hae Lee (in fact I though that when I saw Yeong Hee's picture on the DVD cover) and as a comedy actress she really preformed well here and is quite addictive to watch. All the three main male leads were absolute troopers, too, and their camaraderie together is the main good reason to see this film. They are brilliant and make this movie a positive hit! The group of visitors to Moodori are likewise a very good set of players, also, making it overall a very fine cast. And, yes, the boss is funny really, too! Also, subject matter (hush) never becomes tasteless either, trust me, and by the carefully balanced script that tackles mirth and somber seriousness, it never really can offend anyone or belittle the key subject matter at all - its not tasteless and with the film's final message, it all turns out okay in the wash. After all, its better to tackle a difficult area than side step away from it - and its poignantly delivered. I did find that there could have been a hint reference to Eun Joo Lee by [key subject omitted] regarding the bungee jump at the end, but I'm not sure. Oh, for the sake of my grandmother's over sized birthday pullovers, go on....give this film a try! You'll love it! The cast are excellent and Young Hee looks to be another comedy actress to keep your peelers on. If you liked "A Quiet Family" definitely get it! |
