More Films Carrying Family-Oriented Themes

An interesting trend in the Korean film industry now is that more movies portray complex relationship of modern families.
Our Son Heekyung introduces a few examples of that, and tells us what makes the theme so popular among Korean directors.
How well do you know your family?
For many, "not very" is the answer.
In today's hectic society, 24 hours a day sometimes is just not enough to talk to relatives.
So, domestic directors have taken the lead in helping families break the ice.

RECORDED: "I realize that I've taken my family for granted. Though it's fiction, it was interesting to see how other family cope with their hardships".

More filmmakers seek to stress the importance of family in their works.

SON HEEKYUNG, REPORTER: "The strength of stories based on families is that everyone relates to them in one way or another. And the troubled families portrayed in recent works by Korean directors is a reflection of the changes happening today".

Dramas to comedies are carrying the family theme.
A dramatic comedy released this month is a good example.
"Shim's Family" is director Jeong Yoon-cheol's second feature following his highly-acclaimed debut film "Marathon".
"Shim's Family" contains a unique comedic element.

RECORDED: "Playing the role of the mysterious character Yongsun in this film made me want to spend more quality time with my family. In a way, my character's life was similar to mine".

The film is about an abnormal family struck with a sudden crisis.
All of the family's members develop crushes on the wrong people.

RECORDED: "Though she's my wife and they're my children, many people will agree that you cannot change the way they are. Personality clashes and miscommunication occur among family members, but it's always important to respect their opinions".

"The Show Must Go on" starring popular actor Song Kang-ho is another family-centered movie.
This film noir slated for release next month shows that family is important to gangsters, too.
The plot is about a gangster who will do any kind of dangerous work for the promise of living a comfortable life with his family later.

RECORDED: "It appears that many domestic directors hope that the audience can easily relate to stories about troubled families. Some filmmakers are trying to send the message that though families look normal and happy on the outside, they might not be on the inside in today's modern society".

Slated for release in May is a movie about a father serving life in prison.
He's temporarily released for one day, and decides to meet his son for the first time in 15 years.
The reunion is awkward for both men, but they're unable to hide their sorrow over their long separation, a clear indication that they're family.
