Movie Production Firms to Target China

Domestic movie production firms are poised to establish a presence in China. One of them, IHQ, recently announced a plan to establish Sidus HD in Beijing in August in a joint effort with SK Telecom China.

IHQ will promote the advancement to China of actresses Jun Ji-hyun and Song Hye-kyo and actor Ji Jin-hee and secure three or four Chinese actors, as well as conclude partnerships with established agencies and promotion firms.

The company will also provide photos and video materials featuring top stars to the Chinese mobile service provider Via Tech and diversify its revenue sources by selling movies produced by iFilm and Chungeorahm and TV shows produced by IHQ and YTN Star.

IHQ says the goal of the Chinese office is to explore new markets and unearth opportunities for celebrities managed by the company to advance overseas. The company will first lay a foundation for its advancement to China through celebrities and later expand its Chinese operations to production as well.

The "Gold Rush" of Korean production firms targeting the gigantic Chinese market will likely intensify with the coming of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
