[Music] Performance Industry Meets the World… Endless Exchange With Different Genres

Performance Industry Meets the World

Among the various factors that constitute human life, culture has the greatest capacity to nurture connections and exchange. One culture quickly absorbs the advantages of another culture and develops to integrate naturally into a large wave.

The same applies to the performance industry.

While it is difficult to compare live performances with other genres as they are played out directly in front of an audience, they often borrow from the sources, forms and contents of different genres. In 2010 the performance industry will meet and interact with other genres.

Reinterpreting works from different genres

Recently, the Muk Company announced that the film "JSA - Joint Security Area" will be produced as a musical.

"JSA - Joint Security Area" is an example of one-source, multi-use in the publication, film and musical fields. Based on the 1996 novel DMZ written by Park Sang-yeon, the 2000 film "JSA - Joint Security Area" was directed by Director Park Chan-wook. It was a big hit with its star cast including Lee Byung-hun, Lee Young-ae, Song Kang-ho, Shin Ha-kyun and Kim Tae-woo.

Set in the joint security area, the film deals with a friendship that goes beyond ideological conflicts and ends in tragedy. The musical producer said, "We will use visual effects to portray the DMZ and present a star-studded lineup that is equivalent to the film version".

"Queen Seon Deok", which ended on January 31, is another example of a drama-based musical. Held at the Woori Art Hall of Seoul Olympic Park, the musical began as a one-source, multi-use concept in the production stage, with active involvement from drama producer MBC.

It borrowed the framework of the highly popular TV drama and offered many attractions such as the LED Cheomseongdae and costumes designed by Lee Sang-bong. Interactions with other genres are expected to become a major trend in the performance industry in 2010.

Inviting producers from different genres

In some cases, producers from different genres are invited to the stage.

A representative project is "The Director Comes to the Stage". Since 2008, M-Venture Investment, M-Musical Company and S2 Entertainment have been preparing for this project. Famous directors of Chungmuro, or the Korean Hollywood, will participate in the project.

They include Heo Jin-ho, Ryu Jang-ha, Jang Hang-jun and Kim Tae-yong. Director Ryu Jang-ha, who produced "Springtime" and "Hello Schoolgirl", worked on the play "Mom, I Want to Travel". The play starred Kim Sang-kyung, Kim Sung-soo and Oh Mi-yeon. Director Heo Jin-ho, whose works include "Christmas in August", "One Fine Spring Day", and "April Snow", will be involved in the play Nap, starring Lee Young-ha, Kim Chang-wan and Kim Ki-bum.

Casting actors from different genres

It is now common for famous actors and actresses to appear in plays and musicals. In 2010, many stars also took to the musical stage. The musical I Really, Really Like You, held at Seoul's Gwangjin Culture & Arts Hall until March 1, stars Shin Ae-ra, Park Sang-myun and Byun Woo-min.

Gong Hyung-jin, film actor and cast member of the recent drama "The Slave Hunters", will appear in a one-man play titled Defending the Caveman at the Art One Theater in Daehakno, Seoul. Also, actor Choi Joo-bong is showing off his acting skills in the play I Love You at the Good Theater in Daehakno until February 21.

Cross-genre activities in contents, production and cast will continue to grow for the 2010 performance industry.
