YesAsia Editorial Description
The animation tells the story of a boy named Namoo who lives in a seaside village. Several years after the death of his father, Namoo finds himself faced with further struggles: his grandmother is ill, his mother has a new boyfriend, and his best friend will move to Seoul at the end of the summer. Struggling with the prospect of further loss, Namoo begins to lose himself in fantasy, dreaming of a mysterious girl named Mari who leads him to another world.
The talented director Lee Sung-gang had drawn notice previously for his animated shorts that played at many overseas festivals. With fairly simple tools, he creates for the images dazzlingly: a multi-textured, vibrant world that is poetic in its simplicity. Apart from its remarkable imagery, the film also proves to be a touching portrait of how children deal with loss.
The voices for the film were recorded by real children, as well as some famous actors Lee Byung-hun and Ahn Sung-ki.

Customer Review of "My Beautiful Girl, Mari"
December 18, 2003
| As an Anime freak, I find this animation is different from usual Animes. This is THE Art as I can say like this. But not boring (I hate something boring). The graphic is fantastic, and the story is very moving and even philosophical. Above all, this can be enjoyed by both adults and children without violoent or weird scenes. The best Christmas present!!! |

| This is a beautiful movie. The animation style is very unique and the soundtrack is very pretty. The story is sweet...brings back memories of your childhood and dreaming... Being used to Japanese anime, this movie took a second for me to get used to, but it is right up there in quality with Japan and Disney. Certainly better than that Lilo & Stitch junk Disney puts out these days! |

When this movie first came out, I didn't have too much expectations since I had an impression that Japanese animations are superior to Korean animations. I grew up with Japanese animations. But when I heard that this movie won the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, which is one of the most prestigious animation festival in the world, I decided to give it a try. It was great! I love the production value. I was transported to a fantastic world as I was taken into the imaginary (or not so imaginary) world of the main character. This movie is just like a looking at a beautiful picture and experiencing it for an hour an half. I can't wait until the next product comes out from the team. As for the DVD, I think it is all region, since it worked for my DVD player which is region 1. |
