[National Treasure] Namdaemun: National Treasure No. 1

Namdaemun ("Great South Gate"), also known as Sungnyemun ("Gate of Exalted Ceremonies"), is the main south gate of the city wall of Seoul. It was first built in the fourth year of King Taejo's reign (1398) of the Joseon Dyansty (1392-1910), and rebuilt during the 29th year of The Great King Sejong's reign (1447). During the renovation work in 1961-63, it was noted that there had been some reconstruction efforts dating back to King Seongjong's reign (1479). The gate - the oldest wooden structure in Seoul - was set on fire in 2008 by an arsonist upset over a land deal. The base structure, made of granite blocks, is all that currently remains.

Name: Seoul Sungnyemun

Period: Joseon Dynasty (1398)

Location: Jung District, Seoul

Status: National Treasure No. 1
