Novelist Lee Mun-yeol's short story "The Island of Anonymity" will be published in the Aug. 12 edition of The New Yorker magazine.
The magazine carried four poems of poet Ko Eun in 2006, but the 63-year-old Lee will be the first Korean writer to have a short story published by the New Yorker.
"The Island of Anonymity" was first published in the spring 1982 issue of World Literature magazine in Korea. It is about secret relationships between village housewives and a man named Kaechiri.
The short story was translated by Heinz Insu Fenkl, a professor of English and Asian studies at State University of New York-New Paltz and the editor of Azalea: Journal of Korean Literature & Culture, which introduces Korean literary works to English-speaking regions.
