'The necessity and possibility of a joint animation production between South Korea and North Korea is sufficient'

A forum exploring the possibility of forging an economic cooperation between the South and North Korea in terms of animation production was held in the basement auditorium of the National Assembly Library on the 24th.
The forum was hosted by Gang Hyesuk and Woo Sangho, members of the National Assembly and belonged to the Culture and Tourism Committee of National Assembly. Sponsored by the South and North Korea Economic and Cultural Cooperation Foundation, the forum's subject was "Searching of new ways of animation through an economic cooperation between South and North Korea".
Regarding the current status of the domestic and overseas animation industry, Kim Jungyu, the Head of the Industrial Promotion Headquarters of KOCCA, insisted, "As it is seen in internationally successful cases like Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh and the good performances of world-leading companies like Walt Disney and Dreamworks, and also from the strong domestic animation industry promotion policy of China, the animation industry is a major cultural industry that produces high added value. For the domestic animation industry to advance from its largely OEM nature into one that exports creative animation so Korea can become a strong contender in the world's animation market, it is important to make efforts for the forging of an overseas joint production and economic cooperation between the South and North Korea".
Nelson Shin, the leader of Queen Shim Cheong, the first joint animation between South Korea and North Korea, and the CEO of Nelson Shin Acom Production, gave his full support to the endeavor. He was the first to launch an animation production that was produced through the partnership of the South and North Korea, thereby attracting public attention especially with the release of Queen Shim Cheong in both South Korea and North Korea. It took seven years to complete the said animation.
Choi, Bogeun, Manger of Contents Promotion Team of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, mentioned substantial and policy-oriented support measures, include the support of joint animation between South Korea and North Korea, performance of education program for North Korean animators, organization of investment funds for the animation of South Korea and North Korea, the organization of a Korean animation development policy forum and other systematic support.
