Imjin River Hanwoo Village in Paju, Gyeonggi
The greatest advantage of Imjin River Hanwoo Village in Jeokseong-myeon Paju, Gyeonggi, is that it is near heavily-populated Seoul. It is also located near the Paju Premium Outlets and Heyri Artist Valley. Once you buy your meat at a store and go to any nearby restaurant, you can enjoy charbroil barbecue at a basic setting price of 3,000 to 4,000 won. On the basis of a 1+ grade sirloin, both bullock and cow are 7,000 to 8,000 won per 100 grams. Ddeok galbi, minced beef with vegetables, is also popular. 031-958-9842.
Gwangsi Hanwoo Village in South Chuncheong, Yesan
A hanwoo village with approximately 30 years of tradition, Gwangsi Hanwoo Village only sells hanwoo from cows that have been raised in Yesan. There are 20 or so restaurants, offering hanwoo for 5,000 won per one-serving meal. The price of 100 grams of 1+ grade hanwoo sirloin is 7,500 won. Fresh Korean-style raw beef is also popular. The Yedang reservoir and Deoksan hot-springs are located nearby. 041-339-8631.
Hanwoo Samhap Alley in Jangheung, South Jeolla
The Hanwoo Samhap Alley is located at Jungnamjin Jangheung Market and is open every Saturday in South Jeolla. Around 20 restaurants operate in the area. Hanwoo samhap is Jangheung's specialty, featuring grilled hanwoo, shiitake mushrooms and shellfish together on an iron plate. Once you walk into a restaurant with your hanwoo, the owner will prepare the samhap. The tender hanwoo, grilled shellfish and delicate scent of shiitake mushroom mesh well together. On the basis of a 1+ grade sirloin, both bullock and cow are 6,000 to 7,000 won per 100g. The shellfish and shiitake mushrooms are 10,000 won a bundle. 061-860-0224.
Sanoe Hanwoo Village in Jeongeup, North Jeolla
In the village, there are a total of 44 butcher's shops and 25 meat restaurants, in which the venues both sell and cook fresh meat. The area has been established as a hanwoo village since 2006.
Most stores sell hanwoo that has been personally raised by farmers in Jeongeup, and 1+ grade sirloin goes for 5,000 won per 100g. Sanoe is also famous for producing soybeans. As Mount Moak and Mount Naejang are near, stopping by after going on a trip to enjoy the scarlet maple leaves is recommended. 070-7766-4660.
Donggang Hanwoo Town in Yeongwol, Gangwon
In 2009, members of Yeongwol Hanwoo Association came together and opened a direct-dealing hanwoo store. They only sell hanwoo raised on affiliated farms in Yeongwol. After buying hanwoo on the first floor, you can take it up to the second and third floors to eat. The price of 100 grams of 1+ grade sirloin is 7,500 won. Table settings, including side dishes and sauces cost 4,000 won. Having hanwoo after a day of rafting on the Dong River is recommended. 033-327-1570.
