'Haeundae' Director Set for International Shores

"Haeundae" writer and director Yoon Je-kyoon will direct an English language adventure comedy. The project will be produced by Youn's JK Film which also produced the mega-hit tsunami film that went on to screen at a number of territories around the world as well as pulling in 12 million admissions at home. To further guarantee a Western audience the film will come complete with an American cast and a (U.S) $10 million budget; big by Korean standards but hardly recognizable by Hollywood's.

The unique American/Korean story focuses on children who stay at a temple where ancient Korean ghosts come to visit and statues of Buddha come to life. This true, family film has been compared to other similar films such as Jumanji and the Night at the Museum franchise.

Online Bootleg of 'Haeundae' Angers Korean Film Industry

The Korean film industry is seething after a copy of the blockbuster "Haeundae" was found being illegally distributed over the internet last weekend, especially since the film had galvanized the industry by becoming the fifth Korean film ever to draw over 10 million viewers. Public calls for strong legal action against piracy are gaining support, but it might be too late to stop the spread of the bootleg overseas as it is already circulating on Chinese websites.

"Haeundae" was leaked online to a Korean file-sharing site on Saturday morning, according to CJ Entertainment, a major investor in the movie and its distributor. It spread quickly and by Saturday evening copies were available for download on most file-sharing sites, the company said. CJ had identified 24 sites where "Haeundae" was being circulated by Saturday, while police found over 160. It is estimated that the film has already been downloaded several hundred thousands times in Korea alone.

More than 10 million viewers have now watched the big-budget disaster film "Haeundae" since its release on July 22, becoming the fifth South Korean movie to reach the milestone.

Featuring a tsunami that hits the nation's largest port city, Busan, the movie drew 220,000 and 200,000 viewers over the weekend, respectively, according to film distributor CJ Entertainment.

By reaching the landmark, the film joined the so-called "10 million club" which includes the other hit motion pictures "The Host" (2006), "The King and The Clown" (2005), "TaeGukGi: Brotherhood of War" (2004) and "Silmido" (2003). Thanks to its catchy storyline and effective CG techniques, the film has garnered fans that range from teens to middle-aged people, which has increased ticket sales.

Movie experts are considering the jump in viewers as a green light for further investment in local films, as the success of "Haeundae" came during a difficult time for local cinema.

The port city of Busan has received an unexpected and lucrative boost to its business this year: a mega-hit blockbuster movie featuring the city and named after its famous Haeundae beach.

With "Haeundae" taking the box office by surprise, the number of visitors to Korea's second-largest city has steeply risen, helping local businesses, especially retailers.

The disaster movie, which was filmed entirely in the city by Busan-born director Yoon Je-kyoon, has attracted more than 7 million viewers since its release on July 23. It portrays a fictional tsunami that hits the beach.

Located near Haeundae beach, Shinsegae Centum City, the world's largest department store, said Monday its sales amounted to 16 billion won ($13.1 million) for the last 10 days starting July 27, with visitors tallied at 760,000.
