Pianist Yuki to open film fest

Japanese new age pianist Kuramoto Yuki will perform at the opening of the third Megabox Japanese Film Festival at COEX, southern Seoul, on Nov. 15.

Yuki's piano repertoire - widely used in Korean TV commercials and film soundtracks - is well known among Koreans. Most recently, he collaborated with soprano Sumi Jo on "Memories of Love", the original soundtrack for popular TV drama series "Jumong".

Yuki toured Korea in September celebrating the 20th year of his debut.

The festival's opening ceremony will start with Yuki's performance at Megabox at 6:30 p.m.

"After Yuki plays three or four songs, the opening film - 'Tegami' by Jiro Shono - will be screened from 7 to 9 p.m"., said Megabox programming team staff Gu Sa-deok.

The festival, at Korea's largest multiplex, will screen 18 recent Japanese movies made between 2000 and 2006. Megabox said they selected upbeat movies and hoped that Korean audiences could share the positive sentiments expressed in the films.

Themed "Dream and Love", the festival includes films by Japanese directors such as Junji Sakamoto and Miike Takashi. Some Japanese filmmakers, actors and actresses will attend the festival as well, said Megabox.

The film festival was launched in 2004 to introduce Japanese movies to Korean audiences.
